I just got it today.

It's a nice collection of home studio recordings made in the 1970s. Just the man and his guitar doing what he did best. I find it a bit better than A Hundred Highways and half of Unearthed simply because he, well, doesn't sound like a man on the verge of death.

Uh, yeah..

Anyway, if you're into the man in black, it's a good couple of disks to get. But at 35,000 won, it's a bit steep.

His Folsom Prison live album is a classic. It has such a tragic undertone, yet uplifting to the inmates, like playing a little jig on the walk to the gallows.
"And I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die." (Roars of woohoos from the crowd.)

He's a got a prison album from San Quentin (sp) too, classic.

I'd say that only Dylan is competition for the most important American songwriter for the second half of the 20th century, Leonard Cohen be damned.

I agree but you have to add Bruce Springsteen to the competition

Johnny Cash is incredible, always will be. I teach about him when I teach American Music in my American Culture class

I prefer Folsom to San Quentin. The SQ sessions were done for a BBC documentary and the set comes across like a Vegas lounge act.

The recent extend version of Folsom prison ends on a sad note as you hear the prisoners quietly being sent back to their cells.

Springsteen is great, but how often does he put out an album - every 5 years?

Dunno about Springsteen, must be an American thing. I only know "Born in the USA", which is a little flag-waving for my taste.

Johnny Cash is suitably dark. It was his last couple of albums that got me interested, produced by legendary hip hop producer Rick Rubin. Perfect hangover music.

I think Rubin is more legendary for his production work outside of hip-hop, actually.

"Born down in a dead man's town. First kick i took was when i hit the ground. End up like a dog that's been beat too much, 'til you spend half your life just coverin' up. Born in the USA."

That's flag-waving?

i started listening to jc when i was about 7 years old. my brother and i would sit on our beds with our guitars trying to figue out 'walk the line.'

i finally got to see jc live at the merritt mountain music festival in 1997.

it was like a religious experience for me.
