I want to take the railroad back to Europe after my tour here, does anybody know of any travel agencies that can help out with visas?

Thanks!

www.monkeyshrine.com can do it all. Not the cheapest, but they are very organized and you will get served well.

Let them organize Russian train tickets, Russian accommodation and Russian visa invitation.

But it is cheaper for you to organize your own flights and pay for the visa processing directly yourself.

There are cheaper ways of doing it, but if you don't speak русский язык then you'd be best going through agency such as them.

I don't know how much baggage you'll be traveling with - if you can send the bulk of your stuff home, there's some great things to see along the way (I just can't imagine tramping about Siberia with all the crap I brought with me to Korea!) I definitely recommend stopping at Lake Baikal if you have the chance. I took the Trans Siberian from Vladimir (2 hrs east of Moscow) to Irkutsk (in Siberia) last spring. You might be interested in my trip:

What is the most baggage that one could reasonably take on the trip? I'm just wondering how much I should mail home before I go.

It depends. Russian trains are divided into 1st or 2nd class carriages.

2nd Class Compartment: (4 people per room) only one suitcase and a small bag would be the most you could cram in (bags are stored under the lower bed).

1st Class Compartment: (2 people per room) then you would have space for 2 or 3 bags.

A 2nd class compartment is cheaper and more fun for socializing with other passengers. But a 1st class compartment would give you more storage space.

How big of a suitcase? If it is OK with the airlines would it be OK on the train too? I have a rather large one.

A large suitcase should be fine.

If you go 1st class, then you will only have to share the cabin with one other person, so there would be a lot of space.

you're forgetting 3rd class (platzcarte) thats like a dorm room. 36 (i think) people in an open area, bags under bottom bunks

and 2nd class has that massive space over the door/hallway to store stuff. tons of space in 2nd class.

you'll prob find, on the cheaper trains anyway, that many mongolian/russian/chinese traders carry way more stuff than you would even consider taking

You could try intrepid travel - they do a really good tour from Beijing-St. Petersburg 21 days - inc accomodation, tours and some meals for 1,950 euro. They also give visa support.

Im going with them leaving next february. And they have been very helpful so far with the visa process.
