I went to the gym tonight and pretty much had a free run of the place as there were only five people there....including me. Then, I went downstairs to the shower/sauna room (didn't actually go into either sauna). I was stunned at the number of people there. So, I did a quick head-count - 63 people. Like I say, I didn't actually go into the saunas. I'm sure there at least another 20 people crammed into each, discussing the immense health/fitness benefits of sitting in a hot steamy room doing ****-all. This, while their morbidly obese 10-year-old kid has a massage and body scrub. WTF is wrong with these people? Did they forget to work out?

Then there's the drying room. Another 20 guys sitting around naked watching TV. Don't they have homes to go to? Or do they simply hate their families?

Well, while I understand and sympathize with what you are saying...
1) See bolded. If there is a 10 year old there, it probably is family time. The sauna is a family time thing here
2) I would rather the fathers are there than getting smashed at the bar every night instead (both back home and here) Wink

3) Most Korean people are in better shape than many westerners, and eat better.

You're obviously using the terms westerner and American synonymously.

I should have said English speaking westerner, but Australians, Canadians and the British (not sure about New Zealanders) are all most definitely less healthy than the average Korean (and eat worse).

I assume your gym is part of a 찜질방 (jjimjilbang)? Is that correct? If so, you must consider that the gym is often considered seperate from the sauna and mogyoktang (목욕탕). Many of those you saw in the sauna were there only for the sauna or bath. The gym is only a minor part of the facility and probably unnoticed by most customers, who are there only for the bath and sauna. In the same way you considered a body scrub unneccary (probably), most of the customers there consider the gym an unneccasary part of the total jjimjilbang experience. Remember there are many saunas and mogyoktangs without gyms.

Also maybe consider yourself lucky. Would you have rather had 63 people in the gym and only 5 in the shower room? Very Happy

People are very fond of doing that on Dave's.

I read that asians are actually more obese than westerners in terms of body fat percentage. Dont know how true this is. Korean women I have known have absolutely no muscle whatsoever.

Fair comment, but after weight-lifting, I like to do the cold-bath/hot-bath/cold-bath/../.. routine. It speeds and recovery and reduces the amount of muscle soreness experienced the next day. Not a chance of doing that tonight.

I understand that completely. A crowded sauna makes me really uncomfortable. Something about being shoulder to shoulder with dozens of naked 아저씨 makes one value one's personal space, doesn't it?

Your gym is open on Sundays? Lucky you.

Saunas suck all the moisture out of your body, how can they be good for health?

Koreans eat more healthy I will agree with that.

Except that big portion of them like coffin nails and they are raging alcoholics.
