Tased people have killed more innocent people.

You obviously havent thought that through.

If they got tased that means they got caught. If they had already killed someone before they got caught they would probably not have got tased either, they would have been taken down a lot harder than that. I dont think the taser is the first line of attack with murder suspects.

How do you know? Have you been tased at maximum setting?

If the taser is set at the maximum setting, I guarantee that you will just be knocked out unable to move for several minutes.

Police usually try to arrest the murder suspects, but if they resisted in anyway, ZAP!!!!! CRACK! POP! THUMP! Click-Click! Off he/she goes. Cool

Have you? You sound like Bob and Doug, testing out the shock therapy machine in Strange Brew.

While I wouldn't be surprised if the student was a total ******* and antagonized the police, they went over the line and were totally unprofessional. I think that much is clear.

Mod Edit: Edited for langauge.

It all comes down to the fact that had he behaved like a responsible adult and gone home to get his ID card instead of refusing to leave, there wouldn't have been an incident.

The student created the incident. The police escalated it.

The taser has a history of abuse all related to lack of training.

Taser a 10 year student in a confined area in a school for instance.

Multiple application of taser on a single subject.

These situatautions are covered in training.

Good training and qualification must be enforced.

The taser manual states three shots as a maximum.

To what do you refer the Taser Manual or the Students Resolution?

Undergraduates' resolutions.

Do let me know when the District Attys' Office, the Board of Regents, or a civil court has anything to say on the matter, if anything at all, will you...?

Officer in Taser case identified
Terrence Duren, a 2001 UCLA officer of the year, has been the subject of two other use-of-force complaints.

The UCLA police officer videotaped last week using a Taser gun on a student also shot a homeless man at a campus study hall room three years ago and was earlier recommended for dismissal in connection with an alleged assault on fraternity row, authorities said.

after he refused to show his ID because he thought he was being singled out for his Middle Eastern appearance

This seems to imply that he in fact did have his ID on him and simply refused to show it, as opposed to not having it there and thus not being able to show it if he wanted to. If this is really the case ( that he had the ID on him and just refused to show it ) then I have even less sympathy for him than I did before. Another thing I want to know is are the ID checks random, or does everyone in the library get checked? If it`s the case that everyone gets checked then my sympathy is reduced even further. If the checks are random then it becomes an issue as to whether he was racially profiled, and if he was that`s not a good thing. But even if he was, he still brought this thing on himself.

It`s also not that I condone the 5 tasings. I think they were excessive and not required. It also seems the cop has a bit of a history of over reaction. However in this case, it seems to me to be a case of one dickhead having a reprehensible thing done to him by another dickhead. Seem both parties have character flaws. So while I most certainly dont have any sympathy at all for the student, I also would have sympathy for the cop if the investigation leads to him being disciplined.

"Duren said Monday that he joined the UCLA police force after being fired from the Long Beach Police Department in the late 1980s."

Same LA times article previously cited.
