It's a 6-month contract in Suwon City (found through KIMS-KOREA recruitment)
it's at the TSL Education Center.
there's only 1 other foreign teacher. no korean teachers.
classes: elementary & middle school, about 10 per class
classes run between 2-8 or 7-9pm, 30 hours/week
salary of 2.2 million won/month, 20k/hour overtime pay
medical and dental 50/50, no severance pay listed
furnished single housing within 10 min walking distance
one way airfare provided
10 business days paid vacation + national holidays
anyone see anything wrong here or know anything bad about this employer? any advice would be great. |

I don't know anything about the school, nor have I started teaching yet myself, but what you have here so far looks like something I'd take if it was for a year (with severence of course). What you really need to see though, and post in the contract sticky, is the actual contract. That's where the nuts and bolts are. For the hours, did you mean 3:00-9:00pm instead of 7:00-9:00pm? |

It all sounds normal (with a bit higher of a salary). Nothing special, but nothing wrong. THe severance is a problem, but since it is the LAW (unless they are doing funky things with your start and end time), it might not be a problem (they maybe just forgot it...) |

I don't think severence is required for less than a year. |

My bad. I missed the 6 month thing. It is just so uncommon. Huffdaddy is absolutely right. That's what I was talking about with the start and end times |

yes, i did mean 3-9, not 7-9.
and one more question: would it be too much to ask for a severance bonus? of perhaps half of what is given for a year long commitment?
it's always nice to have an extra grand thrown your way... |

Even though they're not required to pay you the severance, it never hurts to ask and negotiate for it. If they really want and need you, they'll say "yes". Then you just earned yourself an extra cool million by just asking.
Or you could ask to add a contract clause saying, "If you decided to renew your contract for additional 6 months, school will pay you 1 year severance pay." |

Also note that they are offering 10 days vacation for the 6 month contract. That's more than the average 10 days over the full year. |

The only thing I would be uncomfortable about is the 1 foreign teacher and 0 Korean teachers- you would only be the second teacher in the hagwon?
That and the 6 month contract implies to me it is a new start-up school, probably with few students. If this is so, you might be in for a rough time getting your pay, insurance, etc....
On the otherhand, it is only 6 months. If things go belly-up you are out soon enough and still in Korea- making it easier to find that new job.
And who knows, maybe it might succeed and you stay for longer. Either way, I think I'd probably go for it. |

What's 2.2 million divided by 80?
Oh, great overtime. |
