Dunno about Springsteen, must be an American thing. I only know "Born in the USA", which is a little flag-waving for my taste.

"Born down in a dead man's town. First kick i took was when i hit the ground. End up like a dog that's been beat too much, 'til you spend half your life just coverin' up. Born in the USA."

That's flag-waving?

Exactly! People dont seem to pay much attention to lyrics these days. You gotta listen to more than the chorus, especially with a guy like Bruce. Here are the rest of the verses then, for the record...

Quote:
Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man says "Son if it was up to me"
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said "Son, don't you understand"

I had a brother at Khe Sanh fighting off the Viet Cong
They're still there, he's all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I'm ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain't got nowhere to go

Brutal...

He's a got a prison album from San Quentin (sp) too, classic.

I'd say that only Dylan is competition for the most important American songwriter for the second half of the 20th century, Leonard Cohen be damned.

Cohen ain't american for one thing... Wink

I think you gotta add consider both Paul Simon and Joni Mitchel in that group. Ok, Joni's not american either but...

We're showing "Walk the Line in our movie English class. Interesting movie where Reese's pieces proves that she can actually act.

Cohen is too depressing and self consciously introverted for me. I prefer the more profance and exhuberant and iconoclastic social wit of Paul Simon, for example...

When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder
I can think at all

Cool recent interview with the ever-aging Paul Simon.

Seems he has a new album out. Worked on it with Brian Eno.

Wow!
