all the full-time contracts i see for korea are for 30 hours/week. does this mean 30 teaching hours, or 30 hours total?
also, how much prep time does one usually have to put in for classes? i've never taught full time before so i'm not really sure.

No, stupid questions are
1) How many K-chicks can I bang at once, and how often
2) Do I have to actually socialize with Koreans
etc etc 
Most 30 hour/week places don't expect a lot of preparation, but many also don't really have anything to go with either. I think it depends more on you. Can you think quickly and do things without micromanaging everything (ie are you anal?)? Many people here do it, I am sure you can too.
ONE THING TO WORRY ABOUT!
Find out how many classes per week. Is it teaching hours or real hours? If classes are 50 minutes, you could be teaching a lot more than 30 classes for 30 hours. |

It all depends on the school. My first school had 120 hours/month, one hour=60minutes. Since classes were 45minutes long we could have been worked up to 144 classes a month. Luckily we usually only had about 80-90 classes a month.
My current school calls one 'hour' one 40 minute class. For a 120 hour/month contract that works out to 80 actual hours per month.
All depends on the school but the hour=60 minute regardless of class length clause is a deal breaker for me. I was lucky my first school didn't abuse it and wouldn't want to sign that again. |

| I was stupid for my first contract. The contract was for 95 hours/month, with an hour being 60 mins. So, with 40 mins classes I was working 37 classes a week, 148/month. Then my last month I had 160/mo. Yeah, I got OT, but the rate was shyte. I won't be so naive this time. |

| In my last job, a hakwon, one hour was about 55 minutes. Thats a long time to be face to face with students. I did very little preparation as a result. In this job, boys private school, one hour is 45 mintues. I have about 11 contact hours a week. The result is that I do a lot more preparation, and my classes (I think) are infinitely more interesting. At teh hakwon, I spent 30 hours a week there. No more. At the middle school, I spend 40 horus a week, and I am busy for almost all of it. It may sound like I'm getting a raw dael, but I'm not. |

My school is open from 2:30 to 7:30 M-F . I teach most of the 5 hours I am there, but do have an hour or two off each week. That would be about 23 , 50 minute hours a week for 2 million. |

| If you are only teaching 30 classes a week, you are lucky. I have seen ( and done) up to 50 classes a week, depending on the need. I got paid for it, but it will burn you out quick. |

My last gig--Hagwon, had 2:30-8:30 and my Director wanted me to come in every day by 12(!!!) to "prepare the lessons." He must have asked me fifty or sixty times.

At the hakwon
I had 3 X 55 minutes classes, and the rest 30 minutes. Not enough time to do anything, but it added up to 11 classes a day.....and she wanted me to prep for them....yeah right... |

| At my hagwon I teach 22X45-50 min classes. My overtime rate is based after 30 classes, not 30 hours contact time. Then again, I get paid overtime for any classes that arent in my regular schedule - the rate is crap, but I shouldnt be getting anything extra at all so im not complaining. |

They mean 30 teaching hours. The confusion comes in because most contracts do NOT define what is a teaching hour.
In some schools a 50 minute class and a 10 minute break is a teaching hour.
In some schools a 40 or 45 minute class is 1 teaching hour.
In many schools 60 contact minutes is a teaching hour but the classes are only 40 or 45 minutes so you end up with as many as 180 classes per month instead of 120. Good for the hakwon, sucks to be you. |

MWF I teach straight from 2:30-8:30 with zero break time.
T TH is 2:30-6 with no breaks. |

Don't waste your time in Korea, just go straight to Japan.
You will be treated like a dirty/poor white trash in korea just like you said on your post on Japan forum.
