How would one fail a traffic test in Korea? There seem to be absolutely no rulers to the road in Korea. NONE. Has anyone ever applied for a drivers license in KOrea and failed? Is it even possible? |

I don't know, I have never taken my ruler to the road. I just always assumed the distances those signs tell me are correct. |

from the few people I know who have taken the test....apparently, on the first time taking the test, only about 30-40% of the people pass.
There are rules, it's just that the cops don't give a flyin' eff. |

In 1996 Korea was third behind only Malaysia and Thailand in road deaths per capita. That makes it up there as one of the worst places in the world for road deaths, because Asia is the worst region in the world for this problem...

it'd be easy to find a traffic jam and just sit there for an hour. Pass!
Seriously, thats what happened on my driving test in London. We hit a tailback and literally sat there for about 20 mins. I think I passed based on my ability to lift the handbrake and inch forward every 2 minutes. |

1996 was ten years ago and only some eight years after the average Korean was able to buy a car. I think they're getting the hang of it. Compared to SEA countries I've been to, where car ownership and complete disregard physics and traffic rules are endemic and don't seem to lessen with time, Korea's a frickin car driving paradise. And then there's China which spews nothing but horror stories about driving travesties now that the Chinese consumer is able to get hold of a car.
Still, to answer the question, how to fail... I think it's pretty hard since the driving practice and tests are done on a mocked up go-kart track, that bear little resemblance to reality.
When I went for my test, I was spared the actual 'driving' driving test in leiu of a written test. It was possible to fail that considering a good portion of the questions have nothing to do with driving...For example,
Question one:
Which chemical compound is emitted from your exhaust pipe??? |

One does not fail the written portion...they just keep trying. Some korean guy had taken the written exam some 50 times before he passed it was posted in the news some months back.
Driving failures?
As long as you don't have an accident...you pass. |

How about some data from 2003 then? Road deaths per capita, from left to right showing ranking in the world, deaths per 100,000 people in that year, and then the country name. Sticking with the countries that are relevant to us here on daves...
4 5.81 United Kingdom
8 6.97 Japan
17 8.21 Australia
20 8.55 Canada
27 11.48 New Zealand
43 14.75 USA
44 14.9 Republic of Korea
49 18.37 China |

New Zealand's toll of road deaths is very high considering their tiny population against the large amount of land they have.
Indeed, bearing in mind Korea has a large population relative to their small land mass I'd say the Kiwis are doing worse at avoiding the sheep on the road. |

That's very interesting huffdaddy, everyone back home in the UK whines like a baby about our harsh speeding fines and other anti motorist laws (you can get prosecuted for eating a candy bar while driving) but as much as I dislike the nanny state......if nanny can save lives she's not totally useless. |

Per capita stats nullify the differences in population size man, it has nothing to do with it. Our stats arent that good though, but better than Korea's. |
