South Korea has decided to kill some cats and dogs for good measure to prevent the spread of bird flu. Problem is, very few if any experts agree that cats and dogs can spread the virus.

I repeat, the experts agree that there is no safety issue with cats and dogs spreading the virus.

It is horrible, I agree, and I'd like more details about exactly what they're planning to do. Are they actually going to seize people's companion animals, or are they targeting strays and animals being sold in markets? The article says they're killing "all dogs and cats in the area," but to enforce that they'd have to authorize police officers or soldiers to break into people's homes. Will they also kill people who defend their animal friends?
I'd also like to know how they're going to kill these animals, including the birds suspected of carrying the virus ... a few years ago they threw thousands, maybe millions, of birds into big pits and buried them alive. I can't think of many worse fates than that ... it's enough to make me think humans are a truly evil species. And it's another reason that no decent person should even consider supporting animal agriculture.

| I read what you posted seoulunitarian and that's current scientific data. I don't think that when you are dealing with something that could mutate and perhaps kill millions of people you take chances. I'm sorry to all the animal lovers out there but people come first. If the disease mutates into cats and dogs and someone dies everybody will be screaming about why the authorities bowed to pressure from special interest/pet lobby. People before pets, thats just the way it has to be. |

| They've benn killing dogs at Shindang Market, Karak Market, etc. for many years~ cats as well. I think that it's quite sad, really. |

My guess is target stray animals, but who knows. I doubt they'd take away someone's animal unless there was a good reason.

Governmental agencies/people taking people's pets for extermination? You've a point...I doubt it too.
The general dog-killing/eating ajoshi stealing one's pets for consumption (or to be sold for meat)...absolutely. It happened on our farm and all the others in the area.

Red Dog doesn't like humans. He/She prefers animal life.
I couldn't careless personnaly as long as its not me or any one I care for. |

Whether I like humans or not is beside the point. There's no way the authorities will be able to catch every single animal who could possibly have been exposed to this disease. The only solution is for humans to stop breeding animals for food. |

Plants. It takes far fewer resources to feed plants to humans than it does to feed the plants to animals and then kill the animals. And outbreaks of disease like H5N1 are inevitable as long as humans use animals for food. If they really are trying to kill every last dog and cat in the vicinity, their efforts are doomed to fail. |

It is horrible. But the burning of the birds and animal agriculture have nothing to do with eachother. Obviously, burning the birds meant there was not going to be any chicken to harvest (agriculture). |

Not raising animals for slaughter at all means diseases like avian flu won't break out in the first place, and there will be no reason or excuse for this kind of horrific cruelty. |

I agree with this. Though I am opposed to the idea that animals have "rights" I cannot say that reddog is wrong. Using animal meat to feed humans is, by all accounts I have read, amazingly inefficient and wasteful. While I am one who is a 'foodie' and loves meat, I want to disagree with you, I would be being dishonest. Eventually, humans may have to give up our love for meat... Perhaps only eat it on special occasions and such. |
