I was reading the Herald this morning and came across this story:

http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2006/11/28/200611280037.asp

The big issue I have with it can be found in the title and lead:

Quote:
Police plan to summon 168 activists believed to be the masterminds behind violent nationwide protests against the Korea-U.S. freed trade negotiations last week.

It was a protest, and the organizers are NOT masterminds, but ORGANIZERS. To call them 'masterminds' not only reflects an overt and detrimental bias in the reporting of news, but I would say it bodes poorly for the future of Korea.

I don't happen to agree with the protesters, since I think the FTA will be a good thing, nor do I support the farmers since I think prices would drop and ALL koreans would benefit if the produce (rice) industry was opened to imports and competition.

Things like Gwangju and the democratization of Korea never would have happened without these so-called 'masterminds', and those that would have fit that bill during these times of protest in the effort to bring freedom to Korea were often subject to these exact same kinds of 'summons'.

I'm not sure what this says about modern day Korea, but whatever it says, it isn't good.

This is what they are investigating.
(summoning differs from arresting or detaining)

".....protesters were acting under specific orders when the attempted to break into the regional government offices and set fires .."

[quote from same article previously cited]

Apparently the protest wasn't the problem is was the ensuing violence.

Now mind you I was not there, but it sounded like, from the article, that the fires were organized and pre-planned, that would be worth investigating.

I know what the rest of the article says, and I've seen another article about it as well. A few fires etc are going to happen. In Britian, Canada and the US they arrest those that start the fire, not have a MASS round up.

Point taken, however.

I am missing something. You said...

Saw this on the Hearld site. Other than some flagrant bias it sounds interesting. Anyone have teachers going from their schools?

If you are for the FTA, why were you interested in going to a rally against it???

I'm not so simple minded as to not read or not be interested in things I don;t support.

The protests were a MAJOR event, and so when I say "I find something interesting," or that something sounds interesting, it means it's interesting, not that I support it.

I work at a public school, and so I was really curious if anyone working at a public school had teachers from their school attend, and that's why I put up the initial post.

The reporting of the protests was tainted before they even occurred. And that's an issue to me as well.

Honesty, accuracy, and 'balance'(not fox news style) are important in the media, and without them the media cannot be effective. Just like without freedom of assembly and protest, democracy cannot be effective.

When people go to pro-war protests/gatherings in my country, I don't think they shouldn't be allowed to meet or should be arrested.

"I disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."--- yes, I know, it's not a real quote, but the sentiment still rings true.

yeah, I'm all for free trade and this FTA but I would consider going to one of the protests just to check it out. Makes sense to me.

Maybe, but most people who go to rallies they don't support are there only to cause trouble.

When I read English language articles in the media that were written by Koreans, I try to keep in mind that the writer may well not be 100% fluent. You are right that 'mastermind' carries a negative connotation. The writer (or proofreader) may not be aware of that nuance. To add further to my point, later in the article the word 'gubernatorial' is twice misused.

However, I think your larger point is accurate. The Korean media, as seen in the English language papers, is not very objective. Views that should be represented are not and questions that should be asked go unasked.

I don't see how calling in people who organized demonstrations that appear to have been meant to turn violent is wrong or repressive of the government. Protecting people's right to protest government policy is vital; protecting the general public from violent protest is also vital.

Now that's funny. I agree let them burn the city down. Should be fun to watch.

Here's a short list of the 'masterminds' being summoned...

랙스루터, 닥터이블, 모리아르티 교수님, 다트배이더, and 앨느스드 스다브로 브로페르드.
