I work for two schools and because of my frustrations with a coteacher at one I have had to resign from both... the contract re-negotiation would've been to much work for some fat a*s bureaucrat... even though the other school really wanted to keep me and will need me after the winter break... anyway... I digress...
I have about 2 weeks until they should hand me my letter of release and today one of the admin flunkies tells me I have to pay the school back 3 months worth of pension. I think some of you out there should starting asking your schools if they are doing all the paperwork necessary to keep you legal.
To top this I have to repay the travel reimbursement they gave me ** not in the contract ** so... my final pay will be about 900,000 won less than I expected.
Seriously, if you teach at a podunk public school demand a pay statment and make sure they are paying your stuff. I never saw a pay statement and didn't know they weren't taking anything out. |

| I'm not sure about the pension thing, but the repayment of the travel is almost certainly in your contract. It should be pro-rated, though, so if you're three months in, you should only have to pay half of it back. |

Don't sweat the pension issue. When you finally leave Korea you will get it all back along with the matching contribution from the school. |

For the pension...if they did not register and pay you will have to pay the 3 months in....however as pointed out, you can get this back.
Concerning the airfare, it is most likely that this is in your contract. Most contracts ask teachers to reimburse airfare should they leave before the 6 month mark. However, as mentionned it should be pro-rated. |

I think the OP might mean that the school wants him to pay their portion of the pension payments back to them. I could be wrong though. OP??? |

He should still be paying ONLY his 4.5%. Doesn't matter if he quit early, doesn't absolve the school of paying THEIR 4.5%. |

hmmm... my base pay is 2.85 million including a housing allowance... 90 days... errrr... 3 months at 4.5%? does that work out to around 400,000?
....
...

.
i just did the math it works out to 384,750
i am quite sure the reimbursement wasn't in my contract... should i suggest a pro-rated version? that loss of 900,000 is going to suck... |

It's not legal to ask for pension payments back if you leave early, even if it is in your contract.
Call the pension office and they'll set him straight. If your boss still insists on taking that money, you'll have to go to the labor board.
A friend of mine was in the same stituation but it was at the end of her contract. Her director said he was taking the money that he had contributed to her pension out of her final month's salary. One visit to the pension office solved that problem. |

Just checked again.... uh... nope, no statement about repayment of travel expenses.
It's not EPIK or GEPIK. It's sponsored by some county education office in the podunks.

They're asking me to pay in the money they should have been deducting.
Get this though... ha... they are trying to extend me a week beyond my 30 days because the new teacher cannot start until the end of December. My new contract begins a week after they want to release me with Christmas on a Monday... hahaha... how the f*ck am I going to be able to get a visa that quick?
Supposedly it can be done in two days in Japan... but would you really allow for only two days to do it? Especially considering that you followed your contract to the letter and planned in advance to have at least a week to get things in order?
Even funnier though, as I work for two schools I have two contracts. One states that I am to be paid 2.85 million and the other states that I am to be paid an additional 1 million. I know that the two sums are to be combined in the 2.85, but the contracts don't say that.
The first says I get 2.85 for working at the first school. The second says I get paid 1 million for working at the second school.
So, if they try to shaft me, what are the chances of me being to able to shaft them back?
Seriously I paid for my own residence, all that key money was taken out of my first year's savings... it is also unsecured because I don't have a copy of the housing contract. If they jack me around and I can't begin my new contract with the new school I will probably have to leave and lose all the money I have spent on my apartment.
Am I making a mountain out of a molehill here? I thought the public school system would be professional but have been very disappointed. |

Right. That's what's supposed to happen. you haven't paid your 4.5% yet, so they are asking you to pay it. Now if they are asking yo to pay THEIR 4.5% as well, then I'd worry. |
