Here is an excerpt from the original New York Times story. This comes to us "on deep background," with an official speaking to a reporter anonymously, and this means it is probably the Administration's way of subtly countering Ahmadinejad's lecture yesterday on how he would be willing to help stabilize Iraq, but only if the U.S. and Britain pulled all of their forces back home and worried about their own countries, supposedly like everybody else in the world does...

WASHINGTON, Nov. 27 A senior American intelligence official said Monday that the Iranian-backed group Hezbollah had been training members of the Mahdi Army, the Iraqi Shiite militia led by Moktada al-Sadr.
The official said that 1,000 to 2,000 fighters from the Mahdi Army and other Shiite militias had been trained by Hezbollah in Lebanon. A small number of Hezbollah operatives have also visited Iraq to help with training, the official said.
Iran has facilitated the link between Hezbollah and the Shiite militias in Iraq, the official said. Syrian officials have also cooperated, though there is debate about whether it has the blessing of the senior leaders in Syria.
The intelligence official spoke on condition of anonymity under rules set by his agency, and discussed Irans role in response to questions from a reporter. |

I heard some time ago that the American forces in Iraq had demolished al-Sadr's Mahdi Army. What happened? |

al-Sadr's political party now holds seats in the Iraqi parliament. Since Malaki needs his swing vote to hold the majority and maintain power, al-Sadr has the Iraqi government in his pocket.

An "official " reported.....
How many more times do we have to hear of this proof? And thousands???? Come on!!! They don't have that much bread to go around....(in both senses).
While I wouldnt put it past the Iranians to provide assistance etc.....I think this is a big spaghetti stain on the U.S. govt. Let's look at it from a different angle.
Why would it be wrong for a govt to help train forces under occupation and invasion? Why wouldn't it be the "patriotic " and freedom fighting thing to do? Why not? Because it simply is against us.....who cares if it is freedom fighting!!!! Simple and stupid foreign policy and the U.S. should be condemned for condemning those who do all the same things they do... (and let's think of all the U.S. majors and their minnions the world over training every Tom , Vladim and Juan about the finer details of WAR.)
DD
Once again Gopher, get some real facts and stop citing "govt officials" . The time of deep throat has come and gone... |

I think part of the problem in Iraq is the failure to recognize Al Sadr as the leading Mullah (Maybe Ayatollah) in Iraq.
If they just gave him such an official office and absorbed his Militia into the Iraqi Army the US could go home. Iraq is a Shiite majority face facts, will they become neighborly towards Iran, the writing was just put on the wall folks, and followed with a stiff diplomatic slap.
If the madi were propoerly militarized and officiated there would be law and order, maybe some oppression to go along with it but it would be orderly.
Right now you have insurgency - lull - AQ attack on sunnis, sunnis reprise on shiites, volley serve etc - lull - Aq attacks shiites ......
This is a winning strategy for AQ, why entertain that.

Once again, Ddeubel: go lecture someone else. Actually, take your lecture and...[expletive deleted].
Stop personalizing this. And take your righteous complaints to the New York Times, and every other press outlet that listens to and reports information "on background" and "on deep background" -- this is a long-established and respected newsreporting tool. Ask especially Bob Woodward or Seymour Hersh.
But, oh, I forgot. You know better than not only Woodward and Hersh but the New York Times editorial staff as well. And you simply do not approve, do you...?
Frankly, that is just too bad. |

Actually npw just on the news now today they have confirmed this report. In raids against Insurgence the US miltiary found weapons manafactured in Iran, with second half 2006 manafacturing dates on them, meaning they likely didn't go through the black market but were given directly to the terrorists.
As well as confirmation that Hezbollah has trained anywhere from 1000-4000 insuregents. |
