| As an explanation to why the driving is so bad I always tell my friends after the war, the UN hired a Newfie, a Caper and a Quebecer to be the first driving teachers. That explains everything! |

In 1996 Korea was third behind only Malaysia and Thailand in road deaths per capita. That makes it up there as one of the worst places in the world for road deaths, because Asia is the worst region in the world for this problem...

They were number one on the lists that I've seen. Read a story where a reporter in Washington interviewed someone from the Korean embassy about the numbers. His answer? "The roads in Korea are bad". (read my next reply)

The number of traffic accident deaths in Korea is astounding when you consider that Canada has nearly 6 months of snow and ice on its roads (and potholes large enough to swallow a Tico in the summer). |

Having been the victim of a head-splitting accident, Korean at fault, interested in this more than many--but at rates that high, aren't Koreans usually good at banding together for "the country's sake" just to get themselves off this list? I mean, this essentially says Koreans are the WORST at something in the world. How can a good Korean stand it?
Problem is, I don't know if you can teach good driving. Driving is a highly common-sense driven activity that probably doesn't mesh well with the "head-in-the-clouds" Korean demeanor...but at the same time, half of all Korean automobiles have televisions on the front dash. Probably not a good idea for the best driver in the world, so probably a very bad idea for a Korean driver. |

They do fail, ..., the theoretical part of the test, and do it over and over again. Where i come from if you fail your theoretical 3 times you actually have to take classes, and pay for them.
Practical, impossible to fail, they train you like a monkey, how to trun and when to turn. |

Top ten ways to fail a driver's test in Korea.
1. Actually indicating before changing lanes.
2. Stopping at red lights (you're blocking the people behind you trying to continue through).
3. Failing to block every crosswalk.
4. If you must stop at a crosswalk (because a pedestrian is half way across the road), stopping more than four inches from the pedestrian's leg.
5. Exiting a blind alley at less that 50km per hour.
6. Giving way to another driver.
7. Failing to use your horn when on every conceivable opportunity.
8. Putting your infant child in a seatbelt of safety seat.
9. Forgetting to run down your window before horking out the window.
10. Forgetting to bribe the instructer. |

What really gets me going at times is when I am the first car at a red light....it's a four lane road..two lanes one way...and I'm in the right lane wanting to continue on straight without turning right....you with me on this so far..........right lane, going straight once the light turns green...and boneheads behind me come up and lay on the horn wanting me to pull up into the crosswalk or intersection just so they can turn right!
I don't move at all...horns blowing and especially loud when a bus is behind me...I still don't move....boneheads then usually get out of their car and approach my window yelling and ranting, etc...I get out of my car and thell them in korea to "f*&% off" and be patient for less than a minute and a half. The "F*&% off" part really gets them going...but....I'm ready for battle.....never had a fight yet...knock on wood!
A few times its been taxi drivers...who I think are below child molesters....when they lay on their horn....I have actually gotten out of my car...gone to the drivers side window...reached in and turned the engine off...... took the keys and tossed them as far as I could.
That really gets them excited and with a dumbfounded look on their face. |
