Ontario Farmer's "Raw Milk" Stand Attracts
Police & Public Health Workers

Tue Nov 28, 7:01 PM

By Colin Perkel

TORONTO (CP) - A hunger-striking Ontario farmer who ran afoul of decades-old legislation forbidding the sale of raw milk found himself at the centre of a standoff with police and public health authorities Tuesday when they surrounded a bus from which he sells organic food.

Schmidt, who came to Canada from southern Germany 24 years ago, was scheduled to spend Wednesday - Day 7 of his hunger strike - making his case at a downtown Toronto restaurant owned by celebrity chef and supporter Jamie Kennedy.

Schmidt's farm was raided last week by 20 armed Ministry of Natural Resources officers; he blames "ego-tripping bureaucrats" for what he considers an excessive show of force. He said he'll remain on his hunger strike until he's reimbursed for his losses, authorities agree to leave him alone and everything taken from his farm is returned.

"It's every citizen's responsibility to oppose an unjust law," he said. "It's a moral responsibility from responsible citizens."

Hmmmm ... guess if it doesn't have all those "healthy" extras, natural milk just don't cut it ...

My parents and grandparents grew up on farms drinking raw milk, sometimes still warm from the cow (I remember my dad being amazed the first time he drank homogenized milk because he had always had to skim the cream off the top of the milk, which grossed him out as a kid). None of them ever got tuberculosis, which is now practically non-existent in Canada. Besides, the cows are injected with so many antibiotics, the odds of cows transtimitting tuberculosis to humans are pretty slim.

Is there a problem with pasteurization? I will, however, confess I much prefer cheese made from unpasteurized milk. But milk for mass consumption, I'm not sure if pasteurization is a problem.

"The prestige of government has undoubtedly been lowered considerably by the prohibition law. For nothing is more destructive of respect for the government and the law of the land than passing laws which cannot be enforced. It is an open secret that the dangerous increase of crime in this country is closely connected with this."

Albert Einstein
"My First Impression of the U.S.A.", 1921

"... You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer ..." "Prohibition ... goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes ... A prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded."

Abraham Lincoln

I used to be able to buy unpasteurized cream from a dairy back home--skimmed straight off the top of the tank. Absolute heaven...expecially during raspberry/blueberry season. There's just no comparison with the pasteurized stuff.

I did read somewhere that children who drink cow's milk from the farm have less allergies than children who do not drink that milk. Certainly, we do know that we need some bacteria in our system.

I am no immunologist but I think the issue is choice...... Horrible for govt to pretend to have the public interest in mind and these issues only are played out for political reasons or for reasons concerning the jobs/powers of those involved. Get a promotion, pretend to be the noble , protecting society type....

Govt should stay not just out of our bedroom but also out of our decision making processes.....we should be allowed to make choices which we deem in all good faith as healthy for "ourselves".

I grew up drinking gallons of fresh goat's milk and am a cheerleader for this kind of nourishment when kids are young. Do I want the whole society to just drink unpasturized goat's milk? NO. But let those who wish have their choice.

This reminds me of awhile back, how the DEA raided dozens of dried flower shops over a period of time. Why? To stop the sale of poppy bulbs, used in decorative wreaths. Seems they feared an epidemic of casual use of poppy seeds by mothers seeking to sooth their babies with poppy seed tea. A farce.

They found that kids who live on farms have fewer allergies, too.

Actually, it isn't. I was talking about the children coming into contact with the animals, pollens, etc.

Liberals are against government intervention in private matters.

They have also found (in NZ anyway) that those living in country areas have higher rates of cancer than those living in cities

Something to do with the fact that the biggest polluters set up shop where they encounter the least opposition?
