Regarding self-policing,
The times I reported a thread, I believe, all pre-date NC and Gopher.
To me, self-policing means pointing out something to the mods and letting them decide what should be done.
From what I recall, the thread(s) were removed rapidly. Few people even saw them.
As such, i don't see how self-policing is anythng close to mob rule.
And I've already pointed out ways in which "polite language" can still be condescending, humiliating, and/or just as crass as simpler language via innuendo.
In other words, would we make the forum more higher brow by mandating sarcasm and other forms of clever wordplay/repartee?
While it might be more flowery, I doubt it would be even slightly different than what it is right now.
And, as long as we are as far along in this discussion as we are, I'd like to point out one further thing:
The off-topic forum isn't exactly what I'd call civil. The CE forum always seems to get singled out as the place where people are rude/not nice. However, as several people have pointed out, CE is where highly contentious thngs are discussed. But, most CE participants have a thick skin in this regard.
On the other hand, its sometimes surprising to hear the answers you get if you just want to express your favorite Pop-tart flavor in OT.
I believe this is red dog's point as I don't really know his name from CE. I believe he's talking about things that happened in OT (correct me if I'm wrong).
In this regard, I think most CE posters accept te forum as it is. Perhaps it's not friendly, but there are multiple other forums to go "hang out" on.
At the same time, CE has a large contingent of posters who continue to post even after they no longer reside in Korea. Can that be said for these other forums?
Ultimately, I think you can ask people to try not to get so worked up about things, but I don't see any fundamental changes that will actually improve the forum without bias towards one poster or another.
I say this as someone who first posted on Dave's in 1996, back when it was fully unmoderated. What a Wild West Show that was. It needed moderation, but only to the extent which we have.
I'm content with the status-quo. |

Hi Nowhere Man,
Actually my concerns pertain to all the forums at Dave's, not one in particular. I haven't followed the political discussions on CE all that closely, but I have noticed inappropriate posts here -- for a while there were a lot of anti-Muslim and anti-Jewish comments, for example. Most of the attacks on me took place in the general discussion forum and in OT, but occasionally people attack me here too. (The most recent example has disappeared, though.) Also, I haven't complained only about attacks on me ... I've had numerous other concerns about insensitivity and inappropriateness at Dave's, even when I'm not the target. |

I agree. Just so we're clear, I appreciate the overall existence of the mod squad, and would never in a million years advocate a non-moderated forum. Been there, done that, it sure as hell wasn't wasn't pretty. |

Gopher,
Let me clarify what I mean by self-policing. It's more then just clicking on the report post button. I think when someone says something that is over the edge, someone needs to gently point that out. Who would you rather it come from a mod or a peer?
The other thing is that when a report post is sent, we do go and look at the thread and try to figure out what's going on objectively. I've seen a few report posts where the person who reported it is just looking for attention. Each situation is weighed differently depending on what is going on. I just thought I'd add that tidbit.

If you meant me, you couldn't be more wrong. In fact, all I've ever asked the mods to do is moderate the boards fairly and consistently. Let's take the baby murder thread for example -- I didn't post in it at all, but that didn't stop a certain poster from using it to attack me. I've got better things to do than join that "discussion," but that doesn't mean it's OK or that I'm not offended. We've had several recent threads that touched on the issue of what a hostile place this has become and the way some people attack others without provocation and talk down to people whose posts they don't like ... obviously there are many people here who would like to see some changes. Maybe even a silent majority. |
And as I've pointed out to you time and time again, the mods can't be everywhere all the time. This forum is not a place where posts are approved my a moderator before they are posted. People say things and we try to step in and edit or remove things as we can. You obviously can't understand that concept. For godsake get some thicker skin instead of complaining constantly.

Umm, I'm a bit humor-challenged sometimes. Is the above quote meant as a send-up of the kind of trash talk that you've been complaining about here? |

Yes and No, some of it started with the dog meat threads which made some other forum members made at her. I think there's a difference between the trash talk I'm referring to in this forum and the personal attacks brought on by someone's own actions.
