Friday night/Sat morning around 2am I was near Casablanca PC room and the African store at the bottom of Hooker Hill. I saw a crowd of foreigners around a young Korean man and a young Korean woman on the ground. Police were also there. I figured he probably punched her out and the police were questioning witnesses.
I walk away and I see another foreigner leaving the crowd and I ask him what happenned. He said the young man tried to rape the young woman when she was passed out on the side of the street and that an ambulance refused to take her away. I got really angry and walked back toward the crowd looking for a reason to kick this guy's behind. I guess he noticed me eyeballing him because he came right up to me and got in my face. I extended myarm and he started saying "Don't touch me, don't touch me." I said I'd do worse than touch him if he touched me.
He moved around the crowd. He was smoking and for some reason got in a foreign woman's face. I walked over and pushed him in the shoulder. He started yelling "He hit me! He hit me!" He grabbed my wrist and two cops got between us trying to pull him off. I just got very sarcastic and calmly said "He's hurting me, he's hurting me." I was amazed that these two incompetent cops took such a long time to pull him off and didn't use any type of restraining hold on him. Finally he got off and a bunch of foreigners told me that they were all praying for a reason to kick his butt also but that I had to stop.
I walked away but watched more from a distance. An ambulance came and they put the near-rape victim in it. The cops just kept talking to this guy while he was yapping on his phone and eventually everyone left and the SOB was there by himself still talking on the phone.
I was actually angrier at the police. This punk kid tried to rape a woman in the street with several witnesses and the cops didn't do a d*mn thing about it.
Call me idealistic but I think we can't just let this happen. Can anyone suggest anything? I was thinking of writing letters to the police stn, their headquarters, some sort of gov't, newspapers, etc. It might accomplish nothing but I think it would be immoral to do nothing in the face of a gross injustice. A young lady came an inch within being raped, the rapist got off scot free and the police did next to nothing. any advice?

Idiotic Idealist fits you better.

Did you see the crime before you tried to play tonsil hockey with the accused?

Where you raised by a tribe of wild apes?

Please reread my message carefully. As stated, all I did was push him and I only did that after he got right in a woman's face with a cigarette in his mouth. As I also stated, there were several witnesses and the police didn't even bring the guy in for questioning. Fine, there's a chance he didn't do anything wrong but I doubt it very much he started behaving very aggressively at least as soon as I got there and before I'd done anything. There were also many witnesses telling the police and they didn't even take this guy in for questioning.

its hard to know the best way to make a difference.

Sorry but nobody can tell me that this sort of behaviour is rare in Korea. You only have to look at the attitudes and images rampant on korean TV. rape is acceptable here apparently.

Write letters about it to any korea-related magazine or journal, here and abroad. Perhaps when Koreans notice that the world is viewing their country as a haven for the abuse of women, then they will change laws and actually do something.

Hey, dude. I think you had a good grasp of the situation and handled yourself accordingly. I just wish there were more unsung heroes like you in the world, casually hanging around PC Bangs and African shops at the bottoms of Hoooker Hills waiting to see if they can interfere with the police in one of the only dangerous neighborhoods in the entire city of Seoul. In fact, I think you should set up international branches of your watchgroup in less dangerous, but still in need of attention, places like Baghdad, Mogadishu, the Paris suburbs, and Detroit. I know they wouldn't be as much of a challenge to a superstar like you, but I say go international and spread the heroics to the whole wide world. I think the police forces of the globe really need teams of people around to just get sarcastic with them. You could make that your catch phrase: "Don't make me get all sarcastic on your ass!!"

As an alternative, you could just make up stories and post them on Dave's. Whatever works. ^^

Do you think I'm making this up or that I was hanging out looking for trouble? I was coming out of the PC bang (yes, at that time) when this all happenned.
I said the guy was hurting me because I thought it would encourage the cops to at least bring him in or subdue him. Very naive of me, in retrospect.

Don't worry dude love, not all of us see it as a joking matter.

I guess is that most people on here know exactly what you're talking about and have seen something similar themselves. Theyre either too cowardly to have done anything about it themselves, or its just that everyone is tired of hearing about stuff like this in Korea.

Everybody knows that Korean cops are as useless as a turd sandwich!

Korean cops do absolutely nothing to prevent crimes. They just wait around until something happens, wait some more, and then maybe get involved.

I've seen cops pass by people getting attacked and keep on driving. They can't be bothered.

These cops were thinking "Well, the crime wasn't actually committed, so no worries!".

My question is what's with the jerkoffs who were standing around watching?

Anyone who's hung around Itaewon on a Saturday night has these kind of stories to tell. It's one of the sucky things about living here. In the end the change has got to come from Koreans themselves to clean up this sort of behavior as we all know what we say or do is almost irrelevant to the workings of planet Korea.

I figure this'll change as soon as Yongsan goes, takes the business with them, and Seoul city wants to make sure their new park doesn't turn into Central Park circa 1976
