Ripping off poor Africans, $tar$ucks Coffee only pays coffee farmers about $1 a pound for coffee beans that they turn around and sell for $26. No wonder the company is growing like crazy.
Don't buy coffee there! Buy fair trade coffee on-line and brew it yourself at home. Don't give these pigs any more money.

While I do not drink SBs because of what you posted, I also do not shop at Wal Mart, Sam's Club, McDs, BK, and dozens of other companies. SB is definately not the biggest devil on the block or even the most prominent....... I'm actually surprised they get the attention they do....
I guess the area of the US they sprouted from has a lot to do with the amount of attention they get. If there was a Wal-Mart in the downtown area when the first WTOs were protested, then a lot more folks would have bumper stickers saying "Friends don't let friends shop Wal-Mart" on their Volvos....hehe |

Oh dear god someone buys something then sells it at a profit... it's called CAPTIALISM.
Out of all the multinationals I'll never understand why stupid hippies go after Starbucks. The company pays more in insurance than it does in coffee beans and also pays above market price. And while a dollar a day might seem like nothing, I keep being told it feeds a starving child in Africa. Go back to your cave and much on some tofu. |

You call it capitalism. I call it disgusting greed. Most of these big companies treat both their suppliers and end customers like whores. For example: Make a Lacoste shirt in Peru for $4 and then turn around and sell it to people brainwashed by advertising for $80.
Now knowing that Starsucks pays only $1 a pound for beans, you can guess that their cost to make a latte for you is probably less than a dollar (including salaries and overhead). And you've just paid $4. How does it feel to know that you've been ripped off?
Worse still is that the president of Starsucks is going to Ethiopia himself to try to talk the coffee suppliers out of seeking a trademark for their coffee (which would yield a fairer price for their beans). It's too bad the poor Africans don't have the business capital to build their own coffee shops around the world and leave Starsucks out in the cold. That would be real justice.

if you want a latte more than you want $4, then you haven't been ripped off.

It's too bad you can't manage to sound condescending to an entire continent of people. That would be really something.
What a gnome. |

To the OP:
Just curious, how is the coffee from your beloved Tim Horton's any less exploitive than Starbucks? I'm almost certain they pay the same $1 a pound for their coffee.
It's a bit like protesting McDonald's but your favourite restaurant is Burger King, isn't it?

Yes, it is called "CAPITALISM", but that doesn't make it any more acceptable. It is a disgrace, but admittedly it is an expected disgrace. Humanity has a lot to answer for. We can only hope that in the future humans will have sufficient capability to consider the needs of everyone, rather than the greed of the few. |

Thanks that's exactly the point I wanted to make. Starsucks is successful enough and has a secure enough position in the coffee market to be a little more generous to the coffee farmers, but instead just wants to keep them in poverty. Instead of doing something good for the less fortunate of the world, all they want to do is make more money and open more shops. This also makes it difficult for Mom & Pop coffee shops to open up in new markets like China. We might see the day when every poor soul that serves coffee with be serving Starsucks coffee. They should change their logo to this: |

Maybe, but to my knowledge, the president of T.H. hasn't gone down to Ethiopia to talk the coffee producers out of trademarking their coffee. If they could trademark their coffee, they could likely charge more for it. We're not talking about mediocre coffee, but premium beans. It's almost sure they could get more money.
Starsucks are hyppocrates on this issue by the fact that they object to Ethiopia branding their coffee while Starsucks built their name by doing exactly that. |

It makes me feel happy that those girls had to make it and all I had to do was give them money. And it also makes me happy that they still smile and are friendly even though they probably have to work for an hour to earn that much. |

starbucks wants to keep them in poverty? not caring enough to help someone out of poverty is different than wanting to keep them in poverty. starbucks is a business. the business of businesses is to make money. they lower they can buy materials and the higher they can sell their end products, the more money they can make. that's how the game is played. to do otherwise would be considered irresponsible by one's shareholders, as would putting a swastika on thier logo, which i suspect is why they don't do that.
honestly, if you knew of a little shop that sold item X for 5000 won, and you knew of a huge number of people somewhere else who were absolutely dying to get their hands on item X, and were willing to pay 50,000 won for it, would you not take advantage of that situation? i would. does that make me a nazi? |
