What's the best thing about being a great artist or musician?

I like the way some of these characters just do whatever they want and don't have to play by the rules.

Hell, I don't want to comb my hair or shave, I can dress in rags, it's me. As long as I put out something cool once in a while.

Personally I think I would enjoy that the most. Having great talent affords the ability to be a slob, I'd drive an old clunker and be called eccentric instead of a bum. When you're talented or rich it's eccentric, right? Otherwise you're a bum or crazy?

Many greats just didn't and don't fit the mold. God love 'em.

The best thing is the ability to be an ugly person and get tons of hot girls or guys (or both if you're into it). Look at Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.

True, real artisits naturally see a different view of the world around them that makes them quirky in their own way..

Thats the prob. with mainstream Pop, its not art, merely reproduction. Think my arjuma friend here should really don a visor, merging age markets hasn't really been done yet in Korea...

Not having to stop the creative process to go out and make a living.
I can only imagine how liberating that freedom would be.

Doing what you love and making a handsome living doing it... that sounds good.

Agreed with the ugly bit too. Mick Jagger....

I'd say you guys are the ones with a romantic notion of artists if I didn't find the struggle half the beauty. I'm the hopeless romantic. Artists struggle financially for much of their careers, suffer stigma or pressure from others and work at menial tasks or diverting applications at least part time. I am thinking of writers and painters, not musicians, filmmakers or the like. Though struggle and commitment and faith and sacrifice are just as apparent in those fields, at least early on. I used to think of myself as an artist until I burned everything I had produced in a moment of self loathing and disgust. I will either get married and have kids in the next two and a half years or else re-commit myself to my longheld ambitions to do what I've always wanted to do and exhibit the courage to express what I've always wanted to express. Dare to fail at doing what you most want to do. Easier said than done. Or in terms of writing: the writing is the thing, the only thing. I know that, others don't. One is judged by the endproduct not the process, the success or the stain, not the sweat, no matter how oddly placed.

Im a musical artist, thought not financially sucessful. I guess for me what defines an artist is that it's not a choice, it's a compulsion. Recognition is desirable but only as a test of the integrity of what Im going to do anyway. The process is the high...
