|
|
My boss got a letter from the Seoul Board of Education saying that all foreign hagwon teachers are required to attend a meeting. I was going to put up a translation of the letter, but he didn't let me take it home with me. Basically, the meeting is 4 hours long and will be about the following things:
- Korean law regarding, esp. regarding teaching privates
- Korean culture
- The foreigner's role in hagwon education
- Immigration law enforcement law
- Where the foreigner stands in relation to Korean law
Essentially, it looks absolutely useless. Not only that, but I found it insulting.
The director said that last year, the foreign teacher went. He was told that, for every foreigner living in Seoul, it's required to attend this kind of meeting every year. That I find very hard to believe.
Anyone else heard about this? |

I've been here 5 years and never attended one.
There is another thread about the same seminar.

Like I said in the other thread.... simply get lost on the way to it.
It is unpaid, on a weekend and not required by immigration. If you don't go all they can do is piss in the wind. |

Oh, go Q, go! I, among others, would appreciate a frontline report on the asshattery from someone of your clarity and wit. |

Me, neither. I've seen these notices posted at my schools over the last 4(?) years, and was even ordered by Pagoda to go to it the first year they did this. Haven't gone once, and have yet to see any of the consequences they threaten you with. |

Indeed, it is the expected asshattery that has me almost wanting to attend. The only problem is that it's at 9am on Jongno, which means I'd have to get up at 7am on a Saturday. Ugh.
Also, I failed to mention that this notice was sent by the 서울특별시교육청 which is the official board of education in Seoul. So anyone living outside of Seoul may not have heard of this. The penalty they threatened my boss with is 5 points. He said if a hagwon gets enough points, they are forced to close down for one month. The penalty isn't for the foreign teacher.
If there's on thing I've learned about the way Koreans do business, it's that you could talk to 50 people representing the same organization and get 75 different official explanations. So I'm guessing there is absolutely no way to predict whether or not my non-attendance would hurt the hagwon, even if I spoke directly with the person in charge of it all. |

Yeah, this happens from time to time. I've known a great number of foreigners here and have never met anyone who's gone to one. If worst comes to worst, say 'yes', shut your phone off Friday night, and 'get lost' on Saturday morning while you're getting a nice, long sleep. |

I got "ordered" to go to one by my hogwan boss a couple of years ago. She even drove me there and paid for it. After 5 minutes I went and asked where the bathroom was, went out the back door and had a nice relaxing morning at Starbucks. |

I think your boss just wants to show that you went, so getting your signature on something is enough to make him happy. |

Yea, I went to one of these things about 3 years ago when I lived in Wonju. It was on what you have described here. Foreigners and Koreans who lived in our city got up and talked about culture, law, etc. Took a long time too, about 3-4 hours. The session ended with a guitar playing foreigner going to the front and playing "We are the World", while all the Koreans in attendance walked around and encouraged us to sing and hold hands. If I only had a video of it. Perfect material for YouTube. |

Holy smokes man if I can be guaranteed a hippysong singing foreign monkey I'll definitely attend! Was the condescension from the Koreans there lathered on nice and thick? |

Holding hands and singing "We are the world" with Korean Ajussi's is way too gay for me. Forget it.... |
