| Some farmers get far less than 1$ a pound in other parts of the world. Never heard of the starving Mexican coffee growers? |

You're missing the point of the article (see link in OP). Starsucks is trying to prevent the Ethiopians from tradmarking their coffee and asking for a higher price.
Yes, other coffee farmers are getting less than $1, but they maybe growing inferior beans like Robusta or low quality Arabica. The Ethiopians are growing high grade Arabica beans and obviously feel that they should be paid more. The argument that they should and could be paid more is validated by the very fact that they want to trademark their coffee.
Instead of doing what's right, Starsucks is sending people down to Ethiopia to "negotiate" (probably bribe or threaten) the coffee producers.
Starsucks! Leave the Ethiopians alone and leave them their right to trademark their coffee. |

I believe in differential pricing. A person from Ethiopia cannot pay 4 USD per mug of coffee. So if Starbucks were in Ethiopia then they should charge according to the per-capita income there. Then again, Starbucks paying the farmers less is only capitalism. Every company wants to make profit. That is the reason the company exists. So leave Starbucks out of the picture.
Since Starbucks does NOT indulge in raising the quality of life of the farmer, one should not have any alliances with Starbucks at personal level. If its money keep it to that.
Now the question is, WTF is the govt of Ethiopia doing? It is their job to fight for a better living for its farmers. That might involve trademarking "Ethiopian coffee", akin to "Scotch".
Capitalism is just a politically correct word for greed. You cannot draw a line between greed and capitalism. The govt exists to offset this imbalance. The problems appear to be imbalance in the living conditions. Differential taxation is the answer there. The govt should NOT punish a person for being smart. It should only ensure that another person has enough opportunities to acquire wealth.
Poverty exists only because the govt does not do its job. |

Do you think the lack of a trademark is preventing them from raising their prices?
If the Etiopians feel that they should be paid more, why don't they raise their prices? |

| Sorry to go off-topic, but this is really important: flotsam, you did NOT invent artarded, as we all had previously thought. Google shows us the light. Since we don't live in a vacuum, apparently the same typo was made years ago, on a message board, and the word became sort of like the "pwned." |

It has also been used on South Park. (sorry, off-topic.) |

No, it's not really about quality in this case but rather about demand. A true mocha, after all, is not cocoa flavoured beans but Ethiopian Arabica. |

Dude, I never said I invented it...you said it "came from me" and I said "I was the first person to use it on the board". Suck on that.
The reason I use it, is because on SP it was used in an episode just somewhat relevant to Dave's...

Actually, I believe it would be Yemeni. But that's splitting hairs. |

My guess is that they want to create a demand among coffee buyers which will create a fairer price. |

You're right...but Ethiopian coffees are also considered mokha (actually the name of the Yemeni port where most of the coffee from that country is shipped) because they share some of the same characteristics. In any case, Ethiopian coffee is most likely what is in your cup when you drink 'mokha' coffee (unless you're one of those who think mokha=chocolate) because Ethiopia (7th largest producer in the world) produces a lot more coffee than Yemen (46th). |
