Just like to thank Korean customs for opening up all the presents I received from a package back home  !!! It doesn't surprise me but what did surprised me was the 150 dollar tab I had to pay in duty taxes! 
The package was worth about 200 bucks but the shipping cost 350 to send! So they charged me the value of freight and the value of the contents. 8% for non clothing goods + VAT tax, 13% for clothing products + VAT tax.
Good old protectionism!
What I can't understand was how come this hasn't happened before since I received packages in the past and had no problems! Does anyone have any information or have had an experiences like this?

Random inspections. I've been nailed, too, and yet other packages have gone through without a hitch. |

come now...it's not as though no other countries have that.
I had the exact same situation when I tried to get my stuff shipped through a courier and my mom insisted on putting the REAL price on the package.
I learned my lessons
1) Don't count on mom to lie
2) Don't use a courrier for big purchases |

Mexico=100% duty on any package containing products produced in China.
I just let that package go... |

Yep. Every time I've had to pay duty on a package sent to me, I've been taxed on the shipping costs, too.
Most of the packages they've opened in my case have been electronics (understandable), and media (sometimes...unpredictable). They confiscated my Japanese Ring Trilogy DVDs 
Food usually gets through, if it's a small enough box. Large care packages, or Christmas/Bday boxes get opened. Smaller ones, most have gotten through. Anything with used books or clothes has gotten through, mostly, without inspection, but those were not taxed anyway. |

Because I know they tax on shipping costs, too, my folks no longer send stuff airmail or express (WAY too expensive). All large boxes are sent by ship... which means my Christmas box was probably sent last week or so to be here in time for Christmas (takes 7-11 weeks to arrive, usually 7- . If the package gets opened, then the shipping costs are relatively low (no more than $100 for a 20kg box), so taxes are proportional. Low. |

| $350 for shipping a box with $200 of product inside? Did you ship marble blocks or something? It only costs $565 to send a car. Really. |

I think I'm getting mostly some used books and odds and ends things that I needed, nothing expensive. It should arrive pretty soon because it was mailed it before Halloween. I'll let you know what happens with it.

| Just got my Christmas gift box from home. Sealed up tight, no rummaging at all. Last year was a mess though...everything opened, then lashed back together with packing tape. |

A tip: have it sent to your school.
I 2 1/2 years I've never had one package opened and never had to pay any fees. |
