Although there is no law against tattoos, South Koreans consider them symbols of disgrace, often associated with gangsters. Likewise in Japan, tattoos carry a stigma for their association with the "yakuza" gangsters who cover their bodies with them.

Anybody have tattoos that are visible? lower arms, etc?

Just curious.

That article is a little out of date now; I think the military has loosened its restrictions on tattoos because too many people were messing up their lives.

The part of the article I find interesting is this:
Quote:

Confucianism, the centuries-old primer on social behavior, urged Koreans to "preserve the body, hair and skin inherited from ancestors."

Today, however, plastic surgery, hair dyeing and piercing are booming industries.

That looks like a /pwn to me.

Also, I discovered recently that the government has decided to crack down on piercing, which is a lot more popular here. I think they just realised their justification for outlawing tattooing also applies to piercing, so to be consistent they have to treat both as illegal.

One on my right arm, creeps out below the t-shirt line if I stretch or reach... Doesn't bother me, but not good in the classroom, in my opinion... Try to keep it covered... In hindsight, should have had it a bit higher up on my arm...

I always thought any country with US mil bases would have a thriving tattoo industry.

I think it's odd that it's actually illegal unless perform ed by a doctor.....

Then again, it was banned in NYC for most of the 20th century, so maybe it's not that odd at all.

If you take a look around the saunas, swimming pools or gyms you see quite alot of korean people in their 20's with tattoos. Its not a rare event to see koreans with tattoos. Times are changing.

That's good to know. I have some upper arm tattoos that none of my co-workers have ever seen because I wear a suit daily.

I would hate to forgo swimming, public bath houses and other things in Korea just because I made some weird decisions when I was younger.

Where are the other choices?

c)No, I don't like needles.

d) No, everyone seems to have a tattoo nowadays. Not having one is an expression of my own individuality

e) No, I don't feel like spending the money to get it touched up every few years.

f) No, I'm afraid of what it will look like when I'm 60.

g) No...but I'd like one. I just can't make up my mind on a design.

Who friggin cares what you look like when you're 60? and unless you're 59 and its your birthday tomorrow, isn't it a little presumptuous to expect to live to that age?

I have 4 tattoos. I will get more when i leave Korea too.

One of my female (Korean) neighbours has a big one on her arm. She doesn't try and hide it.

Here here - I second the poo-pooing of worrying about what it will look like when I'm sixty.

When I am sixty I'd rather regret things I did do, than things I didn't do.

That said, I am glad my ink is above the sleeve line; I do prefer having the option to blend-in. Hmm... why again am I planning to go to Korea? Smile

(h) I'm fickle. Sometimes I buy a shirt, think it's the best shirt in the world, and hate it one week later. Not only am I totally not into tattoos, even if I did for some mad reason one day want one, I'd be scared of buying a shirt that I must wear forever.

(i) I am a snob. Tattoos have always been, still are, and will be forever more, the stuff of the lower classes. I am a dashing bon viveur. I can't believe I'm even participating in a tattoo thread.

(j) I have absolute contempt and repulsion for tattoos.

As far as tattoos being "lower class", I guess you are entitled to your opinion.

Personally, I don't separate myself from people based on what they own, where they live, how they look, etc. I've been pretty open-minded since I was a kid.

-"Thanks mom and dad for not turning me into some elitist piece of garbage".

PS-I like the scored opium poppy you have in all your posts. Did you know that most farmers in Afghanistan score their poppies horizontally? There are only a few that score them vertically.

Anyway, I guess some folk would consider a symbol of the drug trade/culture to be pretty lower class; me, I don't judge like that.
