I currently run Win XP Korean version, but need a western version for certain programs/files (filename contains accents like accent grave, umlaut etc.) I want a dual boot with Win XP Korean and Win XP English
So, does anyone know where I could get an English (full) version of Windows XP? I looked at the windows website and found the price a bit high (something like KRW 300.000) but if that's what it's going to cost... Anybody know any stores (maybe Yongsan?) or on the internet perhaps? Need it here in Korea, so a foreign website might be a problem (no shipping abroad etc.)
Any help much appreciated. |

There is a microsoft kiosk on the 6th floor of Yongsan station. It is the one next to the escalator and NOT the demonstration booth next to the outside wall.
The full boxed version (not OEM) of XP-PRO will still get you back about 270k won. OEM is about 170k.
OEM of XP-home is about 110k and full version is 150k. |

| Hey, thanx for your quick reply. One question: what's OEM exactly? I need a full version, can I use the OEM or non-OEM? |

OEM stands for "other equipment manufacturer). It is the version that usually comes bundled on a new computer. Typically at home they are only sold with a new motherboard (meaning new or upgraded computer).
Here they will sell it to you rather than lose you to a pirated version.
I don't know for sure if you can create a dual boot system with an OEM version as the 2nd system. Maybe some windows guys can give a better answer to that one for you.
I know that they can't be used for an upgrade. I do know that they are usually only for a new install on a single install system.
The non OEM has no restrictions. |

Should you wish to go down that other route (200,000 plus pricetag will do that), go to yongsan station, right by the computer parts market you will see a bridge/overpass. Go under the bridge and take a walk. Soon enough you will come by a guy smoking a cigarette next to some papers on the wall.
Don't be a mook, go up to the guy and tell him what you need. He'll ask for 50, tell him 20 then agree on 30-35. Give him the cash. He'll send a kid off to go pick it up from the stash that's hidden. Bingo Bango, you have windows Xp in English. |

Better yet, if you choose to go the "other" route, you can go to Itaewon to a store called Johnny Computer. Here, you can get English XP SP2 for 15,000WON.
He is right next to Smokey Saloon. |

Ok, I'm a bit confused. I went to Yongsan, Windows shop. I told them what I wanted; Win XP English dual-booted with my Win XP Korean.
The caretaker (ajossi himself isn't there on the weekends) called and asked. He told me it is not possible to dual-boot Win XP Korean and Win XP English.
My Problem is: I need an OS to handle accented letters (umlaut, accent grave, circonflex, etc.) not just in a file, but also filenames themselves! which my Korean XP is not capable of. AND I need an OS that can handle Korean Hangul.
I think (and hope) there are other people who need the same AND have found a solution. Please, how do you people do this?
I asked about XP Pro with multi language pack. But he told me to contact MS, cause his English is not good enough. He said something about different language packs.
Does someone know what he meant? Is it possible to run Korean (word processor) programs on an English XP Pro with (the right?) language pack? |

One reality is that Asia is fertile ground for pirated software including everything Windows. This is not to say that you can't easily find a legitimate copy of Windows in Yongsan like previously mentioned, just don't be shocked if the copy you buy turns out to be a bootlegged copy. I only made a few trips to Yongsan, but my feeling is to go with a vendor who looks like he may be around for a while, so that if he is hocking pirated stuff he'll hear about it from unsatisfied customers rather than just picking up and leaving the next day.
If you get a nice Boss like mine, he'll just give you a pirated version of Windows XP Pro English pro bono However, it wasn't long before I got a couple of *really* stubborn trojans that were unremovable. Turns out, MS has gotten smarter about detecting pirated versions of Windows and now has its 'Windows Genuine Advantage' online tool to determine whether your copy of Windows is legit. The WGA tool waits for you to update your XP with the necessary Service Packs and critical updates. It crossreferences the license info with its database and then disables your XP's ability to update itself leaving your entire PC vulnerable to all net nasties, ie., viruses. With some persistence I was able to find some tools to fix this, but I had to wipe the HDD drive and did a clean install of XP. Thankfully, the PC didn't have a long history and I had a backup HDD before I did this. My guess is that you would rather avoid a bootleg copy of XP; head to Yongsan like ttompatz said. |

I went to the legit store, because I do want a legal Windows XP (Pro). I've heard people who run an illegal version and have no trouble updating, but I don't want to risk it (+ it doesn't feel right, but neither does the pricetag).

I guess you mean that it is possible to run Korean programs on Win XP Pro. So, if I go to this store again, what should I ask for?
(e.g. Windows XP Pro with which language packs? Are there more than one? Do German and French have different ones?)
I need to able to run:
-Korean programs/word processor
-French and German (and all the other) accents (e.g. Ă ă ) in files correctly shown AND installing and saving filenames with accents
The problems I'm having now are:
-Not being able to install programs that have accents in filenames
-Programs not showing accents (e.g. becomes ?)
-and of course I don't understand anything in Windows, because it's all in Korean (troublefixing I do with a dictionary on my lap and English screenshots from the Internet)
Last question:
Is it possible to upgrade Win XP home to Pro? If so, I could upgrade my Home edition to Pro and add the language pack(s) I need.
Sorry if this post gets so long and tedious, I thought I had a minor problem that could be easily fixed, but it seems to get more and more complex. |

Get your XP-pro ENGLISH that handles the European stuff.
Go to the control panel and language options.
Go to Add other languages.
Install files for east asian languages.
Now go to regional and language options and click the advanced tab.
Check the languages you need supported.
If you have some trouble reading some fonts you can change the unicode setting.
Be a happy camper.
I run English WinXP-pro, MS-Office 2003 and Hangul 2004 and have NO trouble doing everything you have asked about. |

Would that be the UK version or does US version also handle accents?
(I don't need a language pack?)

True...but what could they possibly do? One person, in Korea, that has a pirated version of Windows accidentally presses the update button. It shows up as an "invalid or non-existent" version of Windows. You do not get updated. That's about it. |

It should work on either.
If in doubt, go with what you know (UK version if that is what you are familiar with).
I use the US version but don't have much call for accents, usually just a few for French/Spanish, and those are inside of word documents and a few powerpoint presentations. I have never tried it in a filename. I assume that you can change it by changing the unicode.
The US version usually has no restrictions and can deal with anything by just making changes in the system. |
