The funny part is for some Koreans think we make a ton of money and some Koreans look down on us for working in unstable, low skilled jobs. We get it every which way. The reality is of course somewhere in between. There are people here who make much more than 2 million and there are those who make 1.8 or even less.

Of course, how much do you know about how much your neighbors earn back home?

And, actually, one of the things I like about life here is that for the most part most people make about the same amount of money and as an English teacher I can interact with any class of people here. Back home, you have friends who have made it big time and those who are perpetually hard up. It can be difficult to relate to both.

In the end, Koreans will always be curious and in the dark about what motivates us and what we do. And that will always lead to wild thoughts and tales which will both work for and against us. The key is to learn how to get it to work for you.

there certainly is a huge misconception that all teachers make 5 mil +

however, there are a fair number of 40,000 won/hr F/T and P/T jobs out there.

in fact, if you want one -- and have TOEFL experience, and ideally an F-2 visa -- pm me. job is near pyeongchon station, i'm helping to fill it at no commission.

aynway if you are doing privates and get up to 8 hours a day (how many days a week?), then yes what you earn is sweet. Ofcourse you still need +12 hours in total to prepare for these 8 hours of classes .....

8*40.000= 320 000 - 360.000/12 = 26.667 won

Well if you are hear a long time you need to develop as many classes that are the same so you can spend less time preparing. Plus, if you look at some professors and teachers back home, they don't spend much time preparing after developing the course for the first time. Yes, they are doing research but if you were teaching English Lit, Shakespear or Dickens does not change.

After a few years of doing the same thing one could probably spend an hour or less a day preparing.

You could also try to fill all your classes with similar level students, thus repeating lessons.
