CIA Web Site Contains Wrong Info on Korea
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States posts inaccurate and misleading information on Korea's history and current affairs on its Web site of World Factbook (www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html), a Korean civic group claims. The group is planning to ask the U.S. intelligence agency to make corrections.
Updated on Nov. 30, the Internet site introduces South Korea with a brief sentence that reads: "Korea was an independent kingdom for much of the past millennium."
The expression of "the past millennium" contradicts Korean beliefs that the nations history stretches back more than 4,000 years.
In addition, the site continues to use "Sea of Japan" and "Liancourt Rocks" instead of "East Sea" and "Dokdo" despite Korea's continual requests for changes.
The Factbook site also mistakenly says that Liberation Day is the only South Korean national holiday. It also says Korea is governed by the 1948 constitution and has two deputy prime ministers. In reality, Korea's latest constitution was established in 1988 and it has three deputy prime ministers.
These errors have prompted domestic activist groups like the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea (VANK) to take action.... "We will check the intention of the CIA. This is important because China may make use of this expression as evidence to claim our ancient dynasties like the Koguryo Kingdom," Park said.

Just because the page mentions only the last 1000 years does NOT contradict anything. It just doesn't say anything about the 3000-4000 years before that.

I see nothing wrong with Liancourt Rocks either. If the "island" is in dispute, why give legitimacy to one claim or the other. Give it a neitral name until things are resolved. |

They were also wrong about WMDs in Iraq, which was a very important issue. Does this article surprise anyone? |

It also says that America's national holiday is July 4, Independence Day. So we caninfer that 'national holiday' means 'holiday commemorating the nation'.

According to this official web site produced by Korea's Office of the Prime Minister, the constitution was last amended in 1987. It doesn't say anything about 1988.
About the three deputies, yes that looks like a legitimate error. Strange why they only mentioned two, but I hardly think it was done intentionally to disparage Korea.
So basically, they have one valid complaint, and two errors of their own. |

Koreans history is this: They killed each other before Japanese colonization, they killed each other during japan's colonization, they continued to kill each other after japan's colonization, then after the cease fire with the North,,they still continued to kill each other!!! Maybe they should ask that China be made a part of korea as well!!!! |
