That seems like the best idea. I mean, seriously, no matter how practical anything like that might be in theory, I just can't imagine more than a lunatic fringe in either country ever supporting the idea.

My thoughts exactly. I mean, who on Earth would want to merge with Australia? New Zealand would have to learn how to play rugby really, really badly, buy an echo chamber and pretend it's a trophy cabinet and put up with a spineless prat like Howard as Prime Minister. [shudder] [/shudder]

I'd always thought that he was an Aussie, but displaying that level of higher brain function quite clearly demonstrates that he is a Kiwi (deep, deep down). Although why anyone would want to pretend to be a West Islander is beyond me...

I take it back, jag, you are definitely an Aussie. You should check your dates there, American of the South Pacific.

Europe managed to co-ordinate itself into becoming the EU, I don't see why Australia and NZ couldn't do the same. I dont' really see any real objections to the idea. Australian and NZ citizens already can travel and live freely between the two countries, and there is already a large degree of reciprocity.

Health care, education, unemployment benefit, driver's licences, dual passports, all are reciprocal already. Aussies can even vote in Kiwi elections after a year of residency, and I'd guess this is another instance of a reciprocal agreement.

It's not that expensive to get over the Tasman Strait, and there's more that few, who can say that Australia and NZ have already merged, in effect, if not in name. There's many a Kiwi, in and around Bondi, who'll back me up on this one.

Hmmm, sometimes I despair for the NZ education system that one of its finest takes a witty retort to heart when it was penned in the same spirit as his own earlier jibe. Rolling Eyes

Probably because it wasn't a jibe, but a statement of fact.
