When I entered the apartment, I encountered my first cadaver.
The man, in his 60's, had died in his sleep while in a chair listening to the radio (it was still on).
But what was grusome was that he was 5 days "fresh"
I had seen stuff like that on the net, but seeing it for the first time up close got to me.

And THE SMELL!!!!!
I finished work an hour and a half after and I still have that oder in my nostrils, I mean, it is difficult to forget it.

<snip>

I won't forget today

It's a smell that you'll probably never forget. I haven't, and the few people I know who've had similar experiences all say the same thing. Fortunately, it's not a smell you come across really anywhere else, so it just sticks in the back of your head as a nasty memory.

I've had twinges of it here and there over the years, but never quite the same smell. Look at it this way...next time you run into the smell, you'll recognize it and get someone else to open the door. Smile

(Btw, mine was 7 days in mid-July, no open windows in the apartment.)

SeoulSista'- I'm in New Haven.

Novernae- Exactly!
And the other guy who was out-n-about doing security rounds said as they were taking the body out, he could smell it and he was 200 yards away.
I can only imagine the oder in mid-july, I feel for you on that one.....

I have gotten to know the residents in the complex and I tell afew that if something like that was to happen to them, I hope I am not the guard to find them....I know it sounds cold, but I just don't know.....

Good story. I don't know what's wrong with me, but these are the best stories out there. More details on dead body smell, if able Mr. Green Is it the worst thing you've ever had to inhale? I walked past some fermenting garbage today- that was pretty raunchy...

I was in the national guard and Army during peacetime (1994 to 2000) before being called back into service again this past October.

I was involved in the search mission in JeongDongJin for the N.Korean submariners and I was on the DMZ during the 1997 shootout.
But I can honestly say that during my 5 and half years prior, I had never seen a dead person until yesterday.

And yes, I know quite a few posters here, some of whom I have met in person and talked to on the phone.
I try to keep in touch with them by using this forum and most importantly, it is a way for non-Americans to get a glimpse into what kind of stuff a person might be up against working in the US in a non-teaching job.

For example, today there was a kitchen fire in one of the apartments in the complex. We called the FD and we, as security personnel, had to clear the firelanes and block the elevator for the fierfighters to use.
What was supposed to be a smooth procedure quickly became FUBAR'ed as a crowd of about 60 to 70 tenants started yelling, swearing and threatening the security guards (including myself) and the fire fighters until I threatened that if the situation didn't calm down soon, the police would have to be called in for crowd control (trust me, it was THAT BAD!). They should have known better as to leave a building that could have caught fire at any moment.

Sometimes, it makes me think that after all the complaining people do about things and people in Korea, sometimes we have to take a good look at ourselves...

Sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience Lestat. I hope your work will be more uneventful from now on!

The first time I had to smell a dead body was when I visited the John Tonge Centre (the main morgue) in Brisbane. I nearly vomitted from the smell of corpses and formaldehyde when I first entered. The smell gets into your clothes and I could still smell it even after washing them. I haven't seen or smelt a truly decomposing body (thank God), but a mate of mine was working in the Fingerprint Bureau in the days before computerisation and when he first started there, as the junior staff member, he had all the dirty jobs such as fingerprinting floaters (dead bodies found in water). His first floater, by pure bad luck, had been in the water for about a week. After 5 or 7 days, apparently (I have had NO desire to ever find out first hand), the skin around the wrist separates and the easiest way to fingerprint a corpse in that condition is to peel the whole skin off the hand, put rubber gloves on, then slip the skin over your own hand and fingerprint it. Creepy.

To the OP, that smell will stay with you forever. You won't be able to remember the exact pungency, but if you ever smell it again, you will be in no doubt whatsoever as to what it is. Here's hoping that you never have to.

Big Bird- Hey! Nice to hear from you again....!

The good thing is that yesterday was the first day of peace I had in the past 3 days and I think it will be more peaceful (IE, no disturbances) as winter comes along.

I talk to my coworkers and they all had found at least 2 deseased tenants during their time on the job. So even though this is my first discovery, I was guaranteed it wouldn't be my last.

Periwinkle- The smell is a mixture of all the worst smells a human can make with a strong oder of a raw dead animal.

It is a smell that will never go away and I was lucky to wear a raincoat over my jacket, it absorbed all of the oder that would've been on my clothes.
