|
|
I was doing a cartoon with my class this morning and a student asked me what an 'Oily' guy was. He was pointing to a caveman. I asked him to explain and give actions. He said that it is the feeling you get from looking at someone who is 'flamboyant/ effeminate' (my words used to descrive his actions). The person used as an example was Andre Kim- because when you look at him and his mannerisms, you feel sick. (I don't feel sick- this was what the student was saying!)
So, the word is describing the how the looker is made to feel. I can't think of any words to describe this. I can think of plenty of words to describe someone who is flamboyant- that is not the idea that is being conveyed....Creepy came close- but it doesn't have the idea of sexuality......I can't think of a word that carries the same meaning in English...
I'm just curious- any ideas?! |

Hehe. Good question that I eventually got the idea of, but not sure I can explain.
Poo, I guess my computer got over it's reverse culture shock, cause I can't type Korean now.
Anyway, it's been described to me as the feeling you might get eating spoonfuls of mayonnaise or butter. Something oily or greasy.
'Sappy' might come close. You are on the right track. But I can't think of the right word either. |

Slimy can sometimes have that connotation, but it can also mean dishonest. |

I think the feeling the viewer gets might be the recently coined "skeeved out." It comes from a combination of "sketchy" and "sleazy" while the "_____ed out" is similary to being "freaked out."

I've heard students use "butter man" as well in trying to translate this concept. |

Greaseball?
I totally know the connotations of that one in Korean, but it's one of those words that, if translated for direct meaning, just sounds outta place. Sorta like when they say "cool" or "refreshing" for 시원해 or "stuffed up" for 답답해... Just doesn't cut it. |

I'm not sure if creepy or greaseball quite capture the meaning. It was explained to me that a greasy guy is one who is trying to hit on a woman, or more specifically, uses a deep voice and flirty facial expressions that he would use if he were hitting on a woman, but is not. |

This is the guy my students always give me as an example when they want to explain what it means. I've seen him on the telly a few times and he seems to be cultivating that persona as a kind of trademark, like someone who is trying to be a smooth operator but is just too creepy.
Kind of like the 70's style medallion man...you know the guy with the blow-dried hair, his shirt open practically to his navel, the tight jeans, the big hairy chest and the huge gold medallion nestling snugly in the midst of it, who thought he was are a real ladies man but they just wished he would button up before they threw up! |

So, the 'butter guy, greasy guy, oily guy, marggarin' guy..' they're all the same guy? I understood that it was the sick feeling you got because he was 'proudly gay'. I couldn't think of that word in English. Lost in translation!
If it is just decribing someone who makes untoward advances- on a man or a woman then- sleazy, slimey, creepy, SIFTY (use the urban dictionary) etc. cover it.
I had the feeling it was something more... |

Yes. You've got it. Not much about orientation, but how the observer feels. |

That's a really good summary. |

I usually say "greasy" or "grease ball" which are popular expressions from my neck of the woods for a "buttery man". I say greasy because it is used for people and food just like 느끼느끼(sp?) which would be used to describe KFC and pizza or an overly affectionate stranger |
