I can see a common currency and feeing up and trade and citizenship stuff. But not a totally joined country. New Zealand obviously would get subsumed into the Australian identity and I think there is too much to lose there...  |

I see too many problems with merging. For one thing, New Zealanders would be forced to become bi-linguial. We already speak English, and then we would have to turn round and learn Strine...  |

True, and all jokes aside, New Zealand has three official languages to Australia's one. I can't imagine the ozzies being too keen on making NZSL and Maori official languages in any union.
And then there's the Treaty of Waitangi. |

| i've got memories of learning a lingustic theory of english which claimed the NZ accent, with its bat -> bet; bet ->bit; and bit ->b't, is the future of all english accents. something about languages' phonetic units tending towards a symmetry, and apparently NZ is the most advanced in this way. might be good for us australians to get in on the ground floor? |

Thanks jag, I loved it. Very fair and balanced article, and a good wee giggle too  I must admit that if Oz and NZ were to ever join, there would only be positives for Oz. It would be a huge step backwards for NZ though... I for one am not looking forward to ever living under the rule of John Howard again, disgusting wee toady that he is. |

Say what you will about Howard (I have never voted for him personally) but he has managed the Australian economy very well and negotiated a number of beneficial trade deal for us in his ten years in office. IMHO, his worst marks are for handling of refugee policy. I'm not sure what you guys would lose in a federation, perhaps a modicum of political control, but most of that would come down to states' rights issues anyway. However, I believe the best thing is maintain the status quo with enhanced trade and immigration ties, something akin to the relationship that the UK and Ireland enjoy as members of the EU. |
