Me too.
One of my two best friends in the world is a Belfast boy, like Van, and I hail from San Francisco, where he spent some of the best years of his career in the 60s and early 70s. It's a bit of synchronicity between us that spreads the warmth we feel for each other ...
I saw Van, The Man, perform at The Old Waldorf (rather intimate-sized club in SF) back during his "Wavelength" tour. He's not a big guy, but he has a big sound, and a very large presence ... |

Here I am!!!
Been offline for a few days.....
I'm semi-religious about Van's music. He is the one artist for me who has really touched that part of the senses which can send one into a spiritual reverie.
Fav albums...
Astralweeks
Veedon Fleece
Into the Music
It's Too Late to Stop Now
And it's not just because we're from the same city!! No one really believes me about that though. |

"You wanna a drink of water, there ya go, there ya go!"
"We got Billy comin' around later with a bottle of wine for you baby, but I gotta go, gotta go!" |

Van Morrison and Bob Dylan
Crazy Love, in Athens 1989
|
Hmmmm....I think I got cheated.
In the summer of '89 I was in Greece, hangin' out and absorbing the culture when I ran into three Scousers at the Olympia bus station. Got on well and ended up spending a nice enough time with them in Argos and that god-awful climb up the mountain in Sparta. Then we headed for the coast. Gythio. Drinkin' cheap ass retsina on a balcony with a full moon rising over the Aegean and listening to Deacon Blue...and trying to figure out what the hell these guys were saying. Hunh? What was that?
I was on my way to meet up with a lady archeologist in Crete and they were on their way to Athens to meet a cousin. We happened on a poster for a Dylan concert in Athens, stuck to a telephone pole, and I never did make it to Crete.
We did manage to get tickets to the concert in Athens. There was a little un-needed drama with about who should have been and who shouldn't have been screwing someone between the hours of X and Y and cousin replaced one-third of the original Scouser mix, but it was all tolerable (with enough retsina and/or ouzo, what isn't?).
Dylan came out and played in the soccer stadium under the Acropolis with a near full moon. After the intermission, he came back with Van. He did 'Into the Mystery' and something else. The Parthenon, the moon, the warm summer night, Dylan and Morrison. How much better can it get?
Didn't know there was an album somewhere in there.
(This is where 1/2 of you say, Hmmm...in '89 I was wearing diapers.) |
Next time try mixing a little lemonade in with the Retsina. Good stuff. |

A musician buddy blogged his face to face encounter with Van in the UK over the summer of 99'
http://www.jambc.com/html/VanMorrison.htm
He says that when he turned around & saw him come strolling into the hotel lobby, the guy had a powerful aura of light that literally surrounded him.
My pal claims his doesn't usually see peoples' auras either |

I've met Van twice.
On one occasion he was just barely polite. I was with my uncle who was doing a kind of talk show gig with him in 1987.
On the other occasion, at an awards ceremony in 1992, he was drunk. Had a huge red wine stain on his white tux shirt and was being gross, rude and sexually suggestive to anyone who came near him. Anyone! Male or female!!
I think he's unparalled as a singer/songwriter but he sure never won any Personality of the Year contests. |

Wow! Hehe ... familiar with term separating the art from the artist? IS he BI then or was he just being an ass & clowing around? Guess he's something of a hedonist.
Did you know he's said to be a periodic guest lecturer in PHILOSOPHY at some University in the UK? I'm thinking BATH for some reason.
Favourite albums? Hmmmm ... here's a couple

Poetic Champions Compose, another good one. Good for taking a nap too.
Another thing: Anyone who makes music for 30 years or more deserves respect. I like the oldtimers even when I don't like all their music. |
