I find it very depressing when I think about how many stray dogs I see in Korea. More disturbing was yesterday when I saw three cute puppies looting the trash cans for scraps of food. Not far away was a pet shop. I'd have taken in the dogs where it not for my girlfriend. I should also get around to having a rabies jab. Any idea how much they cost in Korea? I'm assuming I can get one from a clinic.

For me. I haven't been bitten, but there are so many dogs around I think it might be a good preventative measure.

If you had been bit it would be too late. Anyway does Korea have a rabies problem?

I'd also go for a tetanus jab

I know, that's one reason I didn't get them. I'm hoping Korea will be cheaper.

Get the post-exposure shot if you get bitten and there's serious reason to believe the dog had rabies. Otherwise, just don't grab food out of their mouths or pet them when they're growling.

I always saw a lot of stray cats in Seoul, but not many stray dogs ... are you sure someone in the area isn't providing food and shelter? Sometimes dogs in Korea (mostly non-purebreds) are allowed to run loose, but someone is providing minimal care.

Generally when a person is bitten the animal is kept under supervision for 10 days. If it survives then a vaccine for you is not needed. However it is always safe to get vaccinated once you have been bitten by a mammal.
Remember that you need the booster shots every single time you are bitten.
The number of booster shots varies depending on whether you have received a rabies vaccine earlier to exposure or not.

I have not seen many stray dogs in Seoul either. I stay in Seocho-dong a place that has more sexy bars and "massage" parlours than parks and restaurants, so that might be the reason for not seeing many dogs around.

Right, that seems reasonable. I'd only think about getting the shots if a wild or stray animal started behaving very strangely, attacked me with no provocation, and then escaped.

Yea, I had a depressing experience a few weeks ago along this fashion. I was walking down the road and I saw a stray pup. It was young and it was starving........I mean "starving". I went into a family mart and bought a bunch of deli meats and fed it to the pup on the side of the road. I can't even begin to tell you how many Koreans thought this was hilarious and laughed at the sight of me feeding this emaciated dog. Anyway, I'll stop there before I get into trouble. I've tried to find anything resembling a humane society or an SPCA in my area without success. Actually, a 30 something couple passed by and the husband laughed and said I should be careful (concerning rabies?). I guessed he had passable english and I responded, "Thanks for the advice. And it's pathetic that you laugh at the sight of a suffering animal". O.K., I guess I just got into trouble.......I'm aware of the cultural differences. It's still tough to deal with.

There's a sticky in the off-topic forum:

http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/viewtopic.php?t=69320

It's about cat rescue, but the Lonely Lifetime site has links to other organizations that also help dogs. I think you do have to be careful when dealing with unfamiliar animals ... and you also need to be aware that there aren't a lot of resources for homeless animals in Korea. You might want to think about taking the dog to a vet at your own expense, getting him or her treated for any health problems, getting him or her neutered, and fostering the dog until a home can be found. But it does cost money and requires a serious commitment. If you can't do it yourself, hopefully one of the rescue groups can help.

To the OP, you should tell you gf you really want to take in a dog. What kind of kind-hearted woman doesn't like dogs?
