i'm finally going on my visa run adn my boss told me I had to pay. After leafing through my contract, i called him to expain to him that it was his responsiblity to pay it and then read him the direct quote from said contract.
He agreed but I have a sneakign suspicion that I may have problems with this.
If he docks my first paycheck, i call up the labour board? |

Don't take the run. It will lock you into him for the next year.
Wait till payday and find a new job. You're about to get screwed in the axx. I hope you have your KY-jelly handy. |

| If i do the run, and he takes it out of my contract. Can I leave due to a breach of contract and not have to repay my flight? |

Why run???
Jesus this is trigger time Tom!
Get the boss to pay for the visa run up front.
If he refuses, tell him you will go to the labour board and that you cannot work until you have your visa as it would be illegal.
Running should be your last option, not your first.
Has your boss respected other clauses in the contract up to now?
Did he pay or reimburse you for airfare for example? |

If he refuses to pay for your work prior to your visa run there is diddly you can do about it. You are working illegally and don't have a leg to stand on.
If he "deducts" it from the salary you earned by working illegally you are again hooped and have NO legal recourse.
Get out your KY.
I'm sure we'll chat again sometime around your 10th or 11th month because your 11th month will only be your 10th month of work and you may envision problems with severance, pension and your ticket home.
I pray I am wrong, but if your gut tells you otherwise this early...
WELL, you are the best judge of your circumstance.
In my mind, if the boss got you on an airplane for an ASAP position (to work illegally while he took his time processing your visa application) with the promise of a visa run and now he is trying to dump it onto you (about 700k won all up) and he is the beneficiary of your illegal work (you did him the favor by coming ASAP and not waiting for the visa not the other way round) ... that is NOT a good omen.
Sorry Homer... we will have to disagree on this one.
Edited in as an afterthought, the hakwon probably holds the pay for 10 days after the pay period ends ... so they won't lose anything...
My first advice still stands... quit on payday and find a good job. |

No worries Tom.
I share your suspicions here but just think the OP should test the waters before deciding to run this early into a contract.
If you mean quit (sorry I somehow read that as run) then that is sound advice as the OP, should the boss refuse to pay for the v-run will have breached the contract.... |

exactly.
I don't want to just cut up and leave, it just seems like a shitty way to start my time here.
I got my ticket paid (it took a bit of prodding), but i haven't had any major problems.
My first flag was his insistance that i pay for my ticket until i pointed out how i was legally entitled to a free ticket. It doesn't help that the guy i replaced hated my employer so i've heard nothing but negative.
If he doesn't pay it, do i go to the labour board?
It's a shitty way to start my travels, but it'll probably be an omen for more frustrations.
Hopefully, i won't have to bump this thread. |

Your not LEGALLY entitled to a free ticket. It's just one of the perks of most contracts here. There is definitely no law that says he must give you a free ticket to Korea. |

Tell him you are completely broke. Be humble, ask for an advance on your first months pay. Don't look back. Go to Japan. Find a job there. Leave a note, so the guy knows why you're leaving, or else he REALLY may have no clue that you left merely because he's screwing you. |

That's all bosses are required to pay for concerning visa runs.
There must be some communication problems with your boss but nevertheless, he did pay for your transportation.
If you need additional funds for the 2 days you are there, just ask for an advance as many other teachers do. |

Ahead of time! But I've always ened up using some of my own money because Japan is so darned expensive!!! |
