I remember! I remember!
I also remember when 'they' talked about making English the second language of Jejoo-do and it was going to become the 'Hawaii' of NE Asia, with gambling and world-class hotels and hoards of waygookins wandering the streets dripping money for Koreans to scoop up in bushel baskets.
Nothing wrong with high hopes, but it does help to keep in mind when something is just a dream and that you actually have to do things to make it happen. |
Wow, it all comes rushing back like a bad hangover. Thanks for filling in the blanks, Ya-ta. Right, right... English as the official 2nd language, the gambling, the romantic honeymoon destination -- Welcome to Cheju Island! The Hong Kong/Macau/Hawaii of NE Asia! They're a lot richer and better-travelled as a nation today, of course, but Koreans are still good entertainment when they pull antics like this. Whether they succeed or fall on their ass, I stil get paid, so I'm not complaining. |

If Koreans could only drop their xenophobia and ultra extreme crazy nationalism, they would have gone a lot further to realising such dreams already.

| All of this is hyperbole- self promotion. Deep down they know it isn't reality, but they feel like if they promote it enough, then people will start to believe. That will help make it so. |
And how is this different from most of the businesses in the world?
And I find the Korean alphabet very rational myself.
Never been to Hong Kong, so I can't comment on the comparison.
I personally like Busan. |

Wow that last post sure opened my eyes. And I never knew that Korea was a business.
Anyway, while comparing Pusan to HK is a joke, I've maintained for some time now that Korea should aim to build a HK-esque city to attract tourists. I really don't think the historical building here are going to attract many people-especialy with Japan and China right next door. Same goes for "natural scenery." But Korea can compete in terms of technology and construction. They need to outlaw the building of any more of those concrete apartments in Seoul and start erecting more interesting buildings. A trip down the Han could look very impressive if there were more nice buildings and less of those cookie-cutter apartments. When people think of Paris, they often think of the Eiffel and when people think of Sydney, they often think of the opera house, Seoul (or Pusan) need some interesting, eye-catching buildings. |

What? My post opened your eyes despite that sunny day painted on your eyelids.
While Korea is not technically a business, every country is a "brand." Why else would so many countries try to attract tourists?
And you're right about the architecture here: it's godawful. Except Jagalchi market in Busan: I really like that building. |

There certainly are a whole new load of buildings rapidly springing up around Haeundae which do have a Hong Kong style to them.
.
They dont make my eyes hurt, anyway, which is progress for Korea. |
