Socks or Mutliple internet personalities is a disorder. It needs to be treated correctly how to treat it is open for debate. Some experts say it should be entertained others call for complete repression of the alter persona.

Trollism on the other hand must be treated kindness and good sense of humor.

Bored and lonely and wanting attention .... most of the nonsense comes from these fools

Wanting to appear to be someone they are not, though we are all mostly anonymous here... sad is it not? .... a bit of nonsense comes from these fools.

In my two-plus years as a member on Dave's, I've seriously considered making a sock maybe only two or three times. I'd love to have one, actually. What's stopped me is that I can't think of one damn reason to create a sock. People have mentioned quite a few goods ones, but I can't find any that apply to me. Suggestions welcomed.

-- I already get all the attention I need as the Guru.

-- I don't have any scores to settle with anyone.

-- I'm not afraid of repercussions for whatever I might say about an employer. Apparently people create socks to mine posters for info about a new job, but I guess are afraid that their main ID is known and monitored by their current employer, or something weird & nefarious like that.

-- I'm not itching to chat up chick posters or put on a wig and chat up dude posters.

-- I'm not eager to run loose through the Dave's audience like a mad dog, all snarly, indiscriminately ripping holes out of people who did absolutely nothing to deserve it.

Okay, maybe that last one does hold some appeal. But I don't think I'd be very good at it. There's a poster here who's a friend of mine, and sometimes I'll ask his opinion via MSN on something I'm about to post, but am worried that it comes off as too mean. I think every time he's said something like, 'What?? That's not mean!! Geez, I gotta teach you "mean"!' So before I get myself a sock, I guess I should enroll in Mean Hagwon. Sort of a Disobedience School for the Cyber Age.

JG, you make some good points. Really why is there a reason to have a sock?

My problem is with the mean nasty socks (there's one in particular I'm thinking of) that are obvious ploys at causing trouble.

Why would that require a sock?
