So I'm flying to Bangkok tomorrow and I have about 12 or 13 days (I forget). As a lone traveller where should I go?

I'm thinking Koh Chang might be good because it is close to Bangkok so I could get a lot of beach time in before I have to fly out again.

Or I could go to Cambodia because.. I've never been there and it might be interesting.

Or I could go down south but that'd probably entail a day of travel each way which really cuts into my short vacation time.

Where would YOU go if you were arriving in Bangkok on Friday night?

My goal is: lie in a hammock and read books without English yobs and talks about soccer.

Why not do both? Siem Reap is close enough to Bangkok and so is Koh Chang. If I had to pick one I would do Koh Chang as 5-7 days is more than enough in Siem Reap and the surrounding area, beaches, well there is never enough time on a beach.

Clg, did you go to Sianoukville? I did Seam Reap, phnom penh and kratie all were nice wish I got to the beaches there though.

I went to Sihanoukville when I was in Cambodia. My advice is go to Cambodia. Spend 3-4 days in Siem Reap, 2 days in PP and the rest in Sihanoukville. The beaches are nice and pretty clean and it is a really chill atmosphere, not to mention really cheap. I stayed at Markara guest house in S'kville; really cheap and clean and great service. I forgot my watch there and they fed exed to me in Korea at no charge! The cost of the fed ex was more than I spent on my room there. Also there is happy pizza and on the bottom of most menus you can make anything "happy" for about $1. If you go there bring cash, there are no ATMs the only other way to access cash is to get an advance on your credit card at the bank. Check out www.airasia.com for cheap flights from BKK to PP. Check out www.canbypublications.com for good info on all three places. I found better info there than in the lonely planet book.

I didn't make to s'ville as there was a huge flood on the south coast which saw me leaving Kampot with my backpack over my head down a flooded street.

Sihanoukville was alright...the beaches are nice...my favourite was Occheteal(not sure of the spelling).....it was clean, and not too busy. Just bring sunscreen with you, it's near impossible to find, and if you do, it's expensive, and SPF 60.....and I don't think it's real stuff anyways.

My main complaint about the beach there was being constantly harrassed for money. In 30 minutes, I counted 40 people who approached me...beggars, kids waiting for me to finish my can of Coke so they could take it for money, people trying to sell me drinks, necklaces, shrimp, massages, hair removal....you name it! Most days I left quickly and headed back to my hotel to lounge by the pool, because I could never relax on the beach!

Cambodia was a great experience, but at times exhausting and depressing due to the begging and pressure to buy things.

Well I decided to go to Cambodia. I'm at Incheon now waiting for my flight.

Does anyone know somewhere cheap to stay near the new airport?

I arrive in Bangkok tomorrow afternoon but fly out to PP at 7am on Saturday morning, so I want to stay somewhere near the airport. But I don't want to pay $100 at the airport hotel for one night.

In Phnom Penh I stayed at guesthouse #9. The room was basic at best but it was dirt cheap (I paid $5 for a double room), had 24 hour food, an awesome communal kinda vibe, security deposit area and is on the beautiful lake. Seam Reap has seemingly way more rooms right now than visitors. I stayed at the golden orange hotel but it was expensive ($25) by Cambodian standards but very clean, great rooms yada yada ya. In PP I would reccomend staying near the lake. In Seam reap wherever you stay you are never really far from the airport.

just camp out at the airport....depending how long the wait is....OR

if you are looking for cheap accomodation in BKK just go to anywhere on Khao San Road and book a van to the airport for about 60-80 baht in the morning...

I strongly recommend the OK guesthouse in PP. Very good staff, USD$6 for a room.

You might have to get there early.

How do ppl usually bring spending money to Thailand?
