Borat was due to be released on Thur. Dec 2nd, but apparently they showed it to a test audience of 300 people and it got bad reviews so the distributer now says the release will be delayed. I think we all know that means you need to go find a copy on the streets cuz it ain't going to come out at theaters here anytime soon.

It really is a pity.

Not suprising...I've got a simpsons DVD with Korean subtitles and showed it to a friend with limited English and she didn't get it at all.

I'd imagine Borat's humour would be even more difficult to translate into subtitles. I think even if one speaks English very well, they'd have to have lived in the west for a very long time to understand a lot of what we find funny.

Hollywood comedy movies never much success in non-english speaking countries. It's difficult translate and difficult to understand western humors and jokes.

I've noticed alot though that in subtitle sin Korean they over-generalize alot what is being said, for instace if you watch the Ghost Busters II DVD with Korean subtitles they constantly break down the long explanations of ghosts stuff into simple sentences that in no way convey what was actually being said.

"Toy Story" and "Shrek" went over well in NK though the audience had no Idea it was an American product.

Charles Bronsen movies used to have very long cinematic runs in SK back in the 70s

The comedy that come out of Borat is entirely based upon "misunderstanding of culture" and "subtle (sometimes not subtle) nuances of the English language". It wouldn't be surprising that this specific type of comedy doesn't appeal to people without a very good grasp of the English language and western culture.

exactly!!!
what some korean guy is gonna take his date to go watch BORAT?
they will sit there in the theatre and hear westerners laugh in the background and they will just sit there and wait until there is something they can relate to..
Borat has made its millions by ripping other people around the world!
sure its funny. it happens everyday in the locker room or whatever,,
but Koreans might not get it... although.. GAG concert rips other nationalities too..

I saw Borat in Canada a few days ago and was very disappointed.

It's not funny. I for the life of me cannot see why everyone thinks it's so funny.

Basically Borat tries to trick Americans into saying dumb racist things, but they don't take the bait except for one guy at a Rodeo and of course the drunk frat boys.

It was lame.

You want to see funny, go on YouTube and look up Ali G or Bruno. Those are the other two characters Cohen does, and they're funnier.

Yeah, I agree that Borat the Movie wasn't all that good; as you said it was too racially based. Ali G is excellent, who can forget the "dangerous drugs" and "dangerous weapons" and "Cannes Porn festival" episodes. However, I think some of the Borat in England is superbly hilarious. Borat learning to play cricket, lawn bowls, at the rowing club, hunting foxes etc; all classics! Laughing

Plenty of all that on youtube.

I saw Borat this evening in Taiwan.
Oddly, they were showing the movie at the university I teach at - for free!
It's not even in cinemas here yet.

I liked it. It was pretty funny but not necessarily as funny as some of the stuff that I've seen on the Ali G show.

Hey, that Pamela Anderson bit - was the staged? It looked like those meatheads really arrested him and that Pamela was really running for her life! Ha, aha! She just took off! Was that staged?
