Apply for any job from inside Korea, and you have to give a copy of your passport and alien registration card. I just assumed for a while that they wanted to check that you had them, and were of the nationality that you specified. But they don't just want to see them, they insist on having copies. Why?

Do they use the social security number to get information from immigration or somewhere else? Does immigration give any information about any foreigner to any Korean? Just wondering if anyone has the inside dope on this.

no, theres no reason to be paranoid! its just procedure to ask for copies of your passport/arc. most of the time, they just want to see what you look like.

I don't think I'm being paranoid. I mean, I'm not anxious about it. There might be some interesting ramifications, though.

No, that can't be right. They always ask for photos seperately, and I've even been asked to give my arc for photocopying at interviews. They definitely demand a record of your social security number - try to get a job without giving it.

It may be "just procedure", but why?

Do you know exactly what they do with it?

Your arc card is proof that you are here legally, and your passport it proof of your country of origin, so a legit employer may ask for it for that reason.

You are probably worried because you are talking "illegal" jobs and you don't want them to be able to track you down or turn you in if you piss them off. (I don't mean any insult, I personally don't have a problem with side work). You could consider doctoring up a copy if you are really worried (make a copy, change the order of your numbers, and recopy). Then, when you're asked, tell them you have already copied it for them and give it to them.

However, if you are working above board (trying to find a legit full-time gig), you're going to have to submit this stuff anyway, so I don't know what ramifications you are worried about.
