I've had some strange ones. Sometimes its like people really want to say something nice but they really have to search. I've also had some really sweet compliments, don't get me wrong. |

I guess for me the silliest compliments are the ones saying I either look like Bruce Willis or Andre Agassi. The only similarity I see is the fact that all of us are losing our hair and are trying to hide it by cutting our hair very short.
Oh, and earlier this week I had three men in my adult class tell me I was very handsome. All three agreed and the only woman kept her mouth shut. |

Well, I guess I get a lot of compliments that seem sincere enough but I tend to tell people thank you but also that it's funny becuase everywhere else in the world I look normal. Just wanted to let them know in the nicest way possible that their compiments are a bit strange to me.
Anyway- I would prefer to be complimented on things that get better with age - my appearance doesn't fall into that category. |

i used to get the comparisons to entertainment people quite often. i guess it didn't make me feel bad, but the fact that most foreigners don't see the resemblences that koreans do makes it a bit trivial. kinda like, you have white skin, brown hair, blue eyes, and a big nose....you look just like nicholas cage.
the reverse side of this is i think many koreans look strikingly similar. one of my students brought in her yearbook from elementary school and honestly, page after page looked identical.
my new response to one of these comparisons will be "thank you. i've never heard that before. and can i tell you that you look just like that girl over there, and that one over there, and most of the teachers i work with, and five girls on the bus this morning".

aaahhh!
Compliment from a Korean, really meant to be a compliment:
You look Korean!
It's not that looking Korean is a bad thing- it's just that the person that gave it -seemed to think that that was the most AMAZING compliment for anyone on the face of the earth to receive. Y'all kn do be'r 'n that- cantcha? |

1) The small kid on the train asking his brother how to say "Handsome" in english. Then just as they were leaving, he said "You're very handsome"
He couldnt have been more than 7. It was cute.
2) Everyone at the swimming pool staring at my package instead of my gut and back hair.
I think it's a compliment.... |

Yeah, a lot of Koreans don't realize that 'panties' is a gender-specific word in English. |

"You're so handsome!"
I've lost count of the number of Korean women who have said this to me.
A guy who could never get a date back home (yes! that's me!) is suddenly transformed into a blond Adonis.
"I'm too sexy for this board, too sexy by far! I'm a model, you know what I mean, and I do my little turn on the catwalk . . ." |

my (ex) bf and i were on a subway in seoul when this middle-aged man came up to us and struck up a conversation. little wierd, but he seemed nice enough and asked good questions, so ok.
"you make a lovely couple," he said.
in fact, he said it a few times. i was getting a little worried that we had a new best friend.
just as the subway reached his stop, he pulled out his "study with EBS radio" english textbook, and there among "today's phrases" was, "you make a lovely couple!" |

One cold day (10f) while walking to school wearing the fur hat I picked up in Moscow, a street merchant asked me where I was from. "Pennsylvania" I replied. "Oh, you speak excellent English" he responded. |

He probably thought that you'd left your home country out of fear of Dracula. I'd imagine that a lot of Koreans probably think Transylvania and Pennsylvania are in the same neck of the woods; they sound alike, so shouldn't they be alike??? |
