I was told today that I need to complete an end of year tax form.
I have been directed to the tax office website and have read the information, but I have no clue what to do.

The form I have been given is in Korean.

Has anyone else already done this and can help me out?

I did this recently for 2005.... I was late, you are actually supposed to do it in May... My suggestion is to take a Korean speaking friend to your local district tax office (that's what I did and I now have the business card of one of the guys who speaks a little English)... The guy at the tax office actually filled out the paperwork for me.... If you don't have a friend, try taking your papers down to the tax office and seeing if you can find someone who knows enough English to help you.... They will recognize the forms and the fact that you are a foreigner.... It's surprising how few foreigners actually file their taxes.... Perhaps this is because most hagwon owners don't actually turn in the taxes so you don't get the tax form....

I arrived today at the Gunsan Education Office, to brainstorm ideas for the January/07 Winter Camp agenda--and wamo--my EPIK supervisor informs me that I need to pay 700,000 won in taxes. She explains to me, in the most constipated blithering English I've ever had to listen to--that I can either pay her by credit card, or in the form of two monthly deductions from my salary. I've taught for many years in the normal [public] school system in Canada, and also overseas in Saudi Arabia and in Mexico...but I have never encountered as many goofy bafoons, as I've met in this land of milk and honey. I carefully reviewed my last 14 months of bank deposits, and see that the mutually agreed upon monthly deductions have been made consistantly, etc. So, now I'll have to dig a little deeper--call on a Korean freind to translate the bottom line.

The Second World is alive and well in Korea--shanty-town concrete blocks; lit up with neon...the veneer of the digital is an illusion...spitting and raw sewage melting together in one big KT pool.

Can anyone shed some light on this tax issue? It strikes me as awfully lame to surprise me with this one...especially considering the number of "runners" and/or actual responsible EPIK teachers who have worked for this office. They can't be that dim, or can they? Don't they follow some general rules of administrative procedure? I just assumed that the taxes were being paid in an appropriate manner--assumed too much I think (maybe).

There is (was?) some law about teaching here for the first two years, or something, and then taxes being taken out, or not being taken out and then having to be repaid, but that that all depended on what country you're from. Maybe some of your maple syrup loving, hockey playing bretheren can shed more light on this issue for you (especially if they have only been here for one or two years, so far).

Yes, they can.

Not usually. It's probably something that you should look forward to needing to adjust to.
