how many students from your high school go on to major in English?

i just asked, and apparently, in a good year, one.

i'm a bit disappointed because i wanted to start a class on etymology for students planning on majoring in English.

This year we'll have a graduating class of about 105. Of those, about a third will go into jobs / job training, about one third non-degree college programmes, and about one third uni degree programmes. There are at least four who want to be English majors and one who wants to be a language major (English included) at HUFS (and she's smart enough that I think she'll get in). A few others want to be elementary school teachers, and English will be a subject they'll likely teach if they work at a school where the homeroom teacher is also the English teacher, so it's an important part of their education major.

I have a number of grade 1s and 2s who also want to be English majors. Perhaps I'm just lucky that way.

Personally I have always advised my students not to major in English unless they were going to study abroad. At most Universities the students that major in English have lower ability than those from other departments. I think that it is mainly due to the fact that when they study literature, all discussions are in Korean.

I have found that the university graduates from other departments actually have a better understanding of the language. I have also found that more female students want to major in English than my male students.
