I took a job teaching for E. Bo-young Talking club in Jeju Island. What do you guys think??

Buddy. I know you are not trying to sound silly but there is a hagwon on almost every block in Korea. It's unlikely that anyone has ever heard of or would know anything about that particular place.

First, go to the FAQ page. Read the threads there.

If you want more information on that chain, do a search . It sounds like a francise to me, which can be good or bad.

Then read up on living in Jeju. You can search for that here as well. There was even a book written about it. Someone else here might tell you the name of it because I can't remember it.

Then you may want to post the contract here on the contracts thread at the top of the Job Discussion page. Be sure to take the name of the hagwon out of the contract before you post as that may be something a potential employer might not care for.

And make sure you talk to at least two teachers.

I'm friends with a couple guys at E. Bo. Young in Cheonan and apparently the chain policy is to come in at some ungodly hour to prep. Like 2-4 hours before your classes start. It's crazy stuff.

So my advice: get it in writing what time you're expected to come in and what time you'll leave.

For example:

"Working hours shall fall between 2 and 8. You will be expected to come in before class and prep for 30 minutes."

Something like this is reasonable.

I think that you look very, very happy and/or very, very surprised in your avatar. I'd like to see if you still look like that in six months. Laughing

But seriously, I think only you know what's best for you. Hopefully they're paying 2.1-2.2. You should be able to make that your first time around. It's also quite possible, at this time of year, for you to fly over and work at a winter camp first, make some fast money, and take a week or two to make check out the school in person. If you like it, they'll still need you. If something in the pit of your stomach tells you to keep looking, you'll still have that option too.

Well I haven't officially signed my contract quite yet. I have only verbally committed to the institution. I like the idea socks had. That way I can get my bearings on where I would like to teach. I have so many recruiters calling me left and right. It is really tough to make my decision and you all are right, I really have no clue on where to turn with who is right or wrong. I have done my homework however with reading up with things. I really feel it all comes down to who you want to confide your trust in. That is a very tough thing to do.....

I had tentatively accepted a job and then 2 more recruiters called with better options. I wrote all three and told them about the other's offers. The one that I really wanted from the beginning called me and emailed me immediately and offered me more things for my apartment and kind of a "signing bonus". I accepted that offer and signed the contract. As soon as all of my paperwork is finished, I'm off to Hongseong...for better or worse. I'm only a couple of hours from Seoul. You will be quite a ways away from a major city. Is that something that you have thought about? I know that you're anxious and ready to go and I wish you all of the luck in Asia!!!
