I didn't see this here, but I apologize if someone has already posted it...

First, the story can be seen at the Marmot's Hole:
http://www.rjkoehler.com/2006/12/11/seriously-stupid-department-kbs-foreign-beauty-program-slammed-for-racism/

Quote:
The show also apparently has corners featuring foreign women doing all the stupid little things foreigners are supposed to do on Korean TV, including a song-and-dance section, a trying Korean food section and a Korean dictation section.

Quote:

All was as it should bemaybeuntil lovely African-American Leslie Benfield was performing a rendition of a Korean song. It was then that one of the panelsinger Cheon Myeong-hunjumped up on stage wearing a rasta wig and began chanting sikameos, sikameos, a reference to a black-face routine made famous by comedian Lee Bong-won.

Quote:
The NGO Cultural Solidarity has released a statement blasting the production team of Minyeodeului Suda for its failure to take seriously what it [Cultural Solidarity] considered a pretty overt display of racism.

Read it. If you wish, you may continue and sign a petition for an apology from KBS at:

It's really funny how some people do or say mean things and then say it was only a joke. It's not very nice to joke anyways. Some take jokes the wrong way. I get sick of the whole "foreigners only care about sex crap". One of my Korean friends was talking to me last year about Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston breaking up, and then both of them getting with new people so soon. Then she told me, gosh most Americans only care about sex, don't they? I said some of them do, but some don't. But guess what is funny? Last year after she broke up with her boyfriend she got a new one right away. then they broke up, she went running back to the other one, they were together again, now they are broken up AGAIN, and AGAIN, she already has a new boyfriend. She's one to talk, huh? She's not just looking at these guys either.

Also, last year, my school made guys and girls be roommates. I did not like having guys as roommates. My manager forced me to move out of the biggest room in the house, because it had an en suite bathroom. She wanted the new guy to have that room, so me and a Korean girl could share the main bathroom. I was so angry for having to give up MY big bedroom to a guy who was just starting there. I was halfway through my second year. When I told her us foreign girls had to share a bathroom with a guy in the house before, she said "but this new girl is Korean, though". That pissed me off because that came across as rascist to me. Like only us trashy white girls should have to share a bathroom with a man. That Korean girl never came after all, and I gave up my big bedroom for nothing. I had a Korean girl for a roommate last year too who refused to be in the house for just ONE week with a new guy that came over here. She went running downstairs to spend her last week staying with 2 girls because the third bedrrom was free. Oh, the poor Korean princess was too good to stay in a house 1 darn week with a guy. But I had to and I didn't want to either. But after telling me how weird and strange he was, when she came back upstairs to pack up her crap, she asked him to help her put a cardboard moving box together...good one...

Is anyone but princess interested in her whining? Two sentences was enough for me.

Off topic, but same theme....There was an article in the K-Herald or K-Times today (we got em bout at work so im not sure which one it was) about how its ok its not against Korean law to discriminate. It talked about this particular bath house and how they dont like to let S.E. Asians in because they wear their swim wear where as the locals dont, and it makes the locals feel uncomfy! Now if there ever was a crock, that is it....how can a naked person who chooses to be naked be bothered by someone wearing shorts or a suit.
Anyhow, not the point really, but what was the point was how its actually ok to discriminate here. Unreal...! Keep it up Korea, your doing a heck of a job! The Seoul Olympics in 88 must have been a real good time for the Kenyan running team! I can only imagine how bad it was back then.
