To quote the daily show:
"His first name rhymes with Iraq. His last name rhymes with Osama. And his middle name...Hussein!"
He sure won't get the southern vote cuz' he ain't a white male...and that's even before they think about his name too much. |

I wouldn't be so sure.
Barack has the rare advantage of being black without being "black". This raises his chances immeasurably.
And he's good-looking. |

Wilder's a bit on the pale side, but I doubt Virginia voters were tricked into believing he was white.
And I don't think Anne Richards qualified as a white male either. |

Sure, there are black congressional districts in the south, and maybe even a governor here or there that's the exception to the rule...but we're talking the BIG election here for the "leader of the free world." It's a huge difference from the examples given. Oh, and in our electoral system it's an all-or-nothing, the winner takes everything for each state. Last, but not least, Obama's a DEMOCRAT!!!
I really do love the guy and I would love to see him in the oval office. You can nitpick what I said all you want...the man can win the election, but he WILL NOT win the south. |

The South is no longer a Democratic region. Dixiecrats have more in common with Republicans than the Democrats and have finally switched over to the party of Lincoln. The only hope the Dems have of winning the South is to run a white, conservative (by Democrat standards) Southerner. |

I agree that his being a Democrat will hurt his chances of carrying the South. Then again, when was the last time any Democrat carried the South?
If Colin Powell had run as a Republican, do you think he would have carried the South? |

who freaking cares about the south? that's why the dems have gotten their butt kicked: they've put a little effort into winning that part, while they should have put that effort into other areas. Hello Dems, you lost that a couple decades ago: get over it.
They should notice they made progress in the West, and focus on that part of the country. Democrats have more in common with western libertarians these days than they do with the general populace of the south. |

What's that in reference to? (I still love her for her immortal quip: George Bush was born with a silver foot in his mouth.)
Recent history says the Democrats only hope to win the White House is to run a centrist Southern governor. On the other hand, if you are only prepared to win win the last war you aren't prepared to win the one you're in now. I say they should run someone like Joe Biden and then steal Colin Powell and run him for VeeP in a 'unity' campaign--something interesting, exciting and designed to shake up the electorate. (Save Obama till he gets a little more experience under his belt.) |

Gamecoc said that Obama won't carry the south because he's not a white male. |

The only problem with that is the Senate is a graveyard for Presidential candidates. There are too many votes which can be spun into something negative. Senators also lack the experience of being "the man in charge" that a governor has.
History tells us that his only hope is to stay just a short time in the Senate. And to vote with a semi-conservative slant. |

My hope is that he serves as governor first. Generally, they make better presidents. |
