| Oh my God!!! A 2 hour journey ot Seoul on weekends, there you go, too! I tried living up there 2 years, and it's just not my cup of tea. I prefer Seoul, as I am a city loving girl. There are a couple movie theaters in "downtown" Uijeoungbu, and a place for bowling. I didn't even know about the theaters until I'd been there already for 2 years, 'cause I always went into Seoul. two hours to seoul!?!?! I thought it was like 45 minutes. Isn't Uijeongbu at the end of the seoul subway?
Do these movie theaters show English movies? |

| it's a kip to be honest about it, and it takes about an hour and a half to get into downtown seoul (which is the only place to be at the weekends if you want to go out etc). having said that i find that mon to fri it's fine as with work and everything 9trying to save cash) it's probably just as well to be away from temptation. |

Probably not a very social friend...
It's a great place.. maybe a little quietier during the week than most would like, but it's got everything you need...

I live in Uijeongbu...it takes about 45 minutes on the subway to get to City Hall and about an hour to get to Hongdae. the following site will let you calculate any places you want to go>>

Uijeongbu is an alright place to live...I've managed to enjoy the last 10 months here. Don't believe the hype as far as the swarms of troops thing goes. I've only encountered troops a couple of times since being here and I usually go out at least once a week in the Bu. Those I've encountered haven't given me or anyone I've been with any trouble.
As for places to go...the most obvious is "Beer World" which must be some kind of institution by now. You're pretty much sure to run into some foreigners if you hang out there. There's a bunch of other OK places around as well but think small. Cinemas, bowling alleys, places to eat (including western food), department stores etc. etc. are all out here as well.
There's some good hiking to be had close by which is a good way to spend a day.
The only real downside to Uijeongbu is the lack of the buzz Seoul has and the travel time it takes to get there. I absolutely hate the subway ride into Seoul every weekend, especially the one home in the morning.
As I said it's an OK place to live but I'll be moving into central Seoul for my next contract (most people do). |

Is that what the recruiter told you? 
All of the areas at the ends of the subway system are 'thirty-five minutes from Seoul'.  Perhaps they are if you factor out the journey to the subway station, the waiting for trains, and getting to destinations that always seem to involve a number of line changes.
People like to talk up the pluses of the Seoul subway, but it's a pain because it takes a long time to get anywhere.
I didn't mind the long journeys so much in the beginning, but these days I don't venture into the centre of Seoul as much as I used to.
That said, there are plenty of English teachers not living in central Seoul, and it's not like there is any particular area that has more charm or more attractions than any other. |

Yes, with the getting to the subway station, the waiting, the line changing, and the sheer slowness of Uijeoungbu line 1, it CAN take 2 hours to get to soome places in Seoul. But, even in Seoul, it can take a long time to get from point A to B. There is soooooooo much walking in the subway stations, too. I don't see how anyone gains weight here. I get so much exercise from walking in the subway stations and all around the neighborhoods once I get out of the subway stations. |

I don't live as far out as Uijeongbu (Dobong Station) but I can testify that Mon-Fri are quieter because of the time it takes getting into central Seoul and the inpractical nature of the whole expedition. Who cares about a bit of a trek at the weekend. Bring a book, have some good old fashioned quiet thinking time! As someone else mentioned - being further from distractions Mon-Fri might actually be a good thing!
