I'm thinking of going to Nonsan in the spring and would like to hear anything that anyone has to say about the place, good or bad.

I worked there for 5 months back in 1997. I would avoid it like the plauge if I were you. But then again, I'm not you. If you like a small town up in the mountains with lots of farming and constant stares and garbage burning, then you might like it. Don't say you haven't been warned.

Agreed. Been to Nonsan 2 or 3 times. Could be worse - you could be going to nearby Buyeo; Nonsan at least has a McDonalds...

We've got a huge article on living in Nonsan written by some who live there:

I spend most of my weekends in Nonsan (In-laws hometown).

How much of a cultural experience are you up for? I would call this city a proto-typical South Korean country city. There are not that many western people living here. It has supermarkets, a theater and assorted shops and businesses. This would be the kind a place I would go if I was really interested in developing my Korean. I have been going in and out of the city for the last 10 years and the people are fine.

The advantages are that you are near many different mountians for hiking as well as all the historic places associated with the Baekjae Dynasty. Daejeon is less than an hour bus drive away and the ocean is about a 90 minute bus ride to the East. As I mentioned earlier, living here would force one to come to terms with the Korean culture without the benefit of obvious western influences.

If your not interested in Korean history, hiking or the language, living here would perhaps be difficult.

I think you meant to say west~ not east.

I would agree. I did learn a fair amount of Korean there. In light of the fact that there are now jim jil bangs in Daejeon that are open 24 hours, I would say that you could hang there most weekends. I certainly did. Daejeon definitely was my sanity clause!

http://korea.wikia.com/wiki/Nonsan#Overview.

By the way, McDonald's is closed, but there are both Lotteria and B&R shops. Stop by KYU's EFL Dept. and ask for Kim if You want.
