If you were serious about learning korean in the classroom, where would you do it? SNU, Yonsei, Sogang, Ehwa or somewhere else?

I've heard only good things about Sogang, and they seem to have a big focus communication (isn't that the main point of learning a language)

Anyway what have been you or your friends experiences? I know having studied at SNU would probably impress koreans, but I don't give a fat rat's clacker about a Uni's reputation or prestige (I just want the most effective program)

Once again, I'll stick with Sogang.

There are several posts scattered about the board as to why, but take it from someone who studied at Yonsei and Sogang.

Sogang, I've heard you learn a lot quicker there.

Yonsei has the oldest/most famous program but all I've heard about it is that it's very technical, grammar-based, learn-by-rote kind of style.

I'm studying at Sogang too.

You mean you are studying there now or you will start next semester?
If you are studying now, how are you finding it?

Question for those of you who have already studied at one of the programs or are going to.

The application process seems a bit vague, because it seems geared to mostly people who don't have easy access to tourist VISAs like the majority of us teachers do.

Now, we have no need to get notarized letters or anything to obtain a tourist visa, and a 6 month one at that (at least for Canadians). So were you guys able to forgo the whole process of having to get some letter of introduction written by a Korean living in Korea notarized and showing it at some consulate?

I'm assuming you just apply, get accepted, pay your tuition a be done with it?

For both Yonsei and Sogang I've just studied on the 6-month B2 (although some have said that it's illegal, nobody at the school cares). To get a B2 all you need is to be Canadian and to show up at the airport.

A lot of the Japanese students I studied with just got the 3-month visa.

Yeah that's all I've got at the moment too. I just walked in, filled out application forms (you need a passport-sized photo; other than that you can just walk in with nothing) and paid the fees. Pretty simple.

Yeah, i was looking at studying there briefly for this year. What put me off is the fact that the application form was for 2002 and I thought well if there is no professionalism here, I can be sure that the course will be similar.

So i came back on a tourist visa and am just studying everyday with a tutor (my g/f Wink ) and exclusively using Korean in my conversations. i feel this has been better than going to university. Have been using the Sogang internet program as back up though.

I'm not really a structered language program kind of guy, would rather study it myself. Find it a lot more effective teaching myself with occasional guidance from a tutor.

Full time. For what you're after you'd want to do the part-time Ehwa program.

They have evening classes at SNU (Mon & Thur, 18.30-21.20), 4 levels.
I heard they have evening classes at Yonsei too, but 3 times a week.

I'm pretty happy with the SNU evening classes, but have no experience with other Korean language schools.

Evening class SNU

I checked the tuition, wow, SNU is pretty cheap in comparison:

SNU: twice a week, 3 hr classes, 400,000 won (minus: only 4 levels)
Yonsei: three times a week, 2,5 hr classes: 690,000 won (8 levels)
Ehwa: three times a week, 2 hr classes: 1,090,000 won!!! (5 levels)

I'd do SNU if I was going full time.

However I think it would now depend on where my apt. was.
