Well, you have to admire the unbridled optimism of youth! If you look at how far they've come in the last 50 years (near the bottom of 170 or so countries to 11th) it might not be as utterly ridiculous as it first appears; stranger things have happened [but if I were a betting man I still wouldn't put a wooden nickel on that horse]. |

65 or so billion from the US hasn't hurt in that 50 year rush I'd say.
The mindset here is very much against them achieving their goals. |

| Historically, Korea has been considered a prized possesion in East Asia. So, it would make some sense for companies basing EAST Asian operations in Korea. The biggest problem with any ambitous plan in Korea is North Korea. As long as North Korea is around, East Asia (Korea, Japan and China) will be considered unstable to the rest of the world. Strangely, East Asia is probably the most stable part of Asia. In the end, the continued prosperity of China, a unified Korea and Japan are the essential keys for the future prosperity of Asia (at least East and South East Asia). Instead of being the 'Hub of Asia' it is better suited as being the 'Hub of East Asia'. Since, Asia is culturally divided into 4 spheres which are East Asia, South East Asia, South Asia and Western Asia (Middle East). |

The reason mostly is their media. it keeps plugging into their mind so many pointless statistics and facts and saying on current growth trends Korea will be in the top 3 in the world. There is no way Korea will sustain the growth it has in the last 20 years.
Also, the media is so influential here, if you keep hearing the same thing over and over then eventually you will believe it(take the fan death thing for example). All these Korean business analysts get on Tv and because they are high-ranking of course they don't tell lies.
Did you ever notice how Korea always ranks itself against the rest of the world. Every day i hear some new statistic about something comparing itself against other countries. If it beats the US or Japan, even if its something like Kichi eaten per square metre  then it becomes propoganda and shows that Kore is becoming a superpower.
I'm not knocking Korea and I do like it here but often i think a reality check is in order. i know over time this will happen as more and more people are exposed to foreigners and other countries. I just wish it would hurry up. |

Give me a break.  Is it so offensive to people that Koreans have an aspiration to become a leading world power, and therby promote themselves by capitalising on positive statistics and information? I don't think I've ever seen a news report, in any country that goes ...
"In today's news ... well, we're trying to look upwardly mobile, but all we've really done is inflate the numbers to make ourselves look better than we really are. We have no hope in hell of ever becoming a leading world nation. We're crap."

Not a news program, sure, but a few weeks back I caught part of an entertainment program on TV that had an interviewer going around a college campus asking people, "Which nation do you think will be most powerful twenty years from now?" Well, the hosts back in the studio said that the goal was to have ten interviewees in a row say "Korea". Surprisingly enough, they got about seven "Korea!"s ina row, until one unfortunate young man said "China" and he was berated soundly by the hosts and the interviewer.

I saw that show, it was on a Sunday night. It was just about getting the same 10 answers in a row, but they would always say Korea.

No, i have no problem with this. I'm all for Korea advancing as a nation. The point I'm making is that most people take it as a certainty that Korea will be the best. If this happened in my home country in Australia we would be laughing in the streets about how stupid that would sound.

Part of "advancing" as a nation is not having to make bragging rights about the most superfluous, dumbest sh@t. Take the ages-old "four distinct seasons" braggadocio, for example.
Travel "hubs" don't use jingoism as a lure, unless they are fishing for trouble.

Try substituting "The United States", "Canada", "England" or a number of other places for "Korea". Read the new post out loud. You'll see why this post is funny, and not funny ha ha.

| I am always under the impression that it isn't the power of the nation Korea is trying to project but the power of the Korean race. And it is with this racial power trip that is under alot of these factoids that it all gets really freaky. |

I have noticed this phenominon significantly more here than say New Zealand, which is the only other country I care to comment on seriously as these are the only two countries I've lived in for any length of time. |
