| Romanizing it as Kim Jong-il leads everyone in the west to pronounce it as if it were actually 김종일. It's like Kim Yu-na. Everyone pronounces her name as if it were 김유나 instead of 김연아. |

No not at all.
Words like Song, Long, Bong, Wrong etc do not have a 엉 sound in them.
Song , Long etc have a Long A sound in them. Like AH.
A doctor might ask you to open your mouth and say AH. That is the sound in words such as long and song.
It isn't similiar in Kim Jung Il's name. It is not a long A.
엉 is not a long A. It is an UH sound.
Like Chung, rung, stung etc. |

His name isnt JONG as in the word LONG or SONG
Long? song? Michael Phelps Bong?
It's more of a Jeong than a Jong so it's prounced like Jawng like is Jaw, or saw.
I wonder how the spelling for Kim Jeong Un is in Korean.
Is it pronounced like oon like in soon or un like in sun?
I don't pronounce 정 like 'bong', but neither do I pronouce it like 'Jung".
Like Chung, rung, stung
BONG rhymes with LONG, rhymes with SONG... |

No matter how you pronounce his name, he is still a piece of human detritus.
May he suffer a slow and agonizing death. |

So????
If you look at any of the photos from the North Korean mass games, when ever they form his name in cards or candles, it is always spelled
김정일
such as in this sign:

No it isnt.
정 is pronounced Jung. (juh-ng) Not Jong (JAH-NG)
Furthermore if you watch the movie JSA or any korean movie that ever mentions him, they pronounce it Kim Jung Il |
You're just flat out wrong on both accounts. At first glance nearly every educated native speaker would pronounce "Jung" and "Jong" very differently; "Jung" using the short u sound is the wrong vowel for the Korean 어 sound in 정. |

The short u sound in the English language is not equivalent to the Hangul 어. |
