I had little money and lost my phone throughout the holiday, so I stayed home and watched TV and ate noodles for 3 days. Absolutely boring, and I wallowed in self pity, a lack of creativity, and general hatred of Korea even though I put myself in my own situation. When I emerged from my little hole, I was approached by a foreigner who was welcomed by a bug-eyed freakiest waygook contest response.

I got pissed for 6 days straight, almost died in a scooter accident and peeled several friends off the pavement. What a deal.

My neighbor was incapacitated so I spent a lot of time cooking for both of us. In between meals, I discovered that Mark Twain's Roughing It is not about kinky sex, but was still pretty entertaining. And watched the 3 DVD set of Kurasawa movies I bought as my Chusok present.

All in all, a good time was had by all, except my neighbor who felt lousy but ate well.

1. got trashed hard style for like 2 straight days in Suyu
2. ate some killer homemade barbecue ribs in Suyu
3. Bobster's birthday which involved quite a few shots of Jager
4. went to some Chagell art gallery thingie
5. hung out with the Chica a lot

Considering how little I had planned until the weekend of Chuseok, it was pretty sweet.

Hmmmm, I spent a lot of time in traffic, slept in a room with a 96 year old woman, wore a hanbok, bowed to a memorial table, took a short hike in a hanbok and watched a bunch of men bow, fished in a river, played with little kids, peeled chestnuts, sorted bean sprouts, dished out rice, and ate A LOT of food, then spent a lot more time in traffic. Fortunately, all this was in Jirisan, and the weather was brilliant.

I don't know what to tell you -- I myself saw no sign posted, did not receive a text message via cell-phone, and even went to the bank on friday morning to pay bills and was not informed of this. I knows i wasn't the only one. Maybe some branch managers didn't get off their asses in time, as even some koreans i talked to (in my tiny village of about 10,000 ) were punk'd.

Did you have to bow too? In my husband's family only the men have to, so I just watched (and took some pics Wink )

Peppergirl, my husband's family is the same as yours, EXCEPT if you're a new "recruit" and we just got married last month. I think that they were saying, "Here ancestors, meet the latest family member."

Actually, I think it's kind of sad that just the men do it -- not that I want to bow as it isn't part of my culture, but I wish that any daughters we have could. Also, one cousin is actually just the son of one aunt (either a divorce or a death was involved, but my husband doesn't know which) so he doesn't bow either. I felt kind of weird about that...

Did you go to Kyongju, like you said you'd planned?

No, that plan fell through a week before. Then I was going to stay home but a Korean friend phoned saying he's driving up the east coast, which is what I most wanted. I said sure, called another nearby foreign teacher and hopped to it. Then I find out that the others don't want to go there and the real plan is Andong, where I'm going in two weeks anyways for the mask festival. We then meet up with a fellow Canadian teacher in Masan while on our way and end up drinking for two nights before our driver bails on us because he can't find us the next morning while we only went for McD's, we don't have his mobile number, he thinks we left, hours of waiting prove fruitless, then we return home. And my back aches from a recent injury aggravated by sleeps on mats.

All in all, Chuseok was still better than last year.

I continue to get nightmares about how the brunt of Typhoon Maemi hit this island off the southeast coast.

Yes.
Here what I received when I first tried to access the Woori Bank English webpage:

Here what appeared when I finally could accessed the page.

(That is correct. The message was blank.)

They had nothing displayed in the parts of Nowon I live/walk around. People who can understand Korean said they got about 3 days notice. That's not exactly great notice.

I just tried to visit with friends. A friend from Portland who is being chased by Korean men in Bundang thinking she's a Russian prostitute I bought her pizza. Met with my friend who is the web master at the KNTO site I bought coffee.

Had a date with a cute genetic engineer on Sunday (when I figured out that woori was *beep* up and had 20K won in my pocket).

Monday a cute MD flaked out on me. I just went to sinchon and had sushi.

Tuesday I went to Hyehwa for coffee at Starbucks and then walked to Dongdaemoon to find the Russian area. I was hoping to find a Russian bakery. Everything was pretty much closed and just saw a lot of scary Russian types. All the Russians I know back in Canada and the USA are software developers and engineers. These Russians all looked like drunken sailors. I was surprised some of them didn't have a hook. Then I walked to Jongno. I enjoy trying to explore Seoul on foot. Trying to walk from on Starbucks to another Starbucks.

Wednesday had really bad roast chicken at a chicken HOF with my translator friend.

Hey Very Happy , Vanislander. I know what you mean about wanting to drive up the East coast. The Summer vacation two years ago I took the motorbike from Ulsan up to some place around Taebaek (but on the coast). It's really nice. Somewhere between those two places there's a fossil museum. Pay a few thousand to enter. It's right on the coast highway, can't miss it. It has a larger display of fossils alone than the complete mineral/crystal/fossil collection of the geology dept. of the Uni I went to. Two floors, whole building to itself. On the open rooftop are a collection of petrified logs.
Takes a long time for a back strain to settle out Smile . Last Christmas I did a woah daddy on mine and was getting around like an ancient 'spiderman', clinging to walls like I loved them just to get between the W.C. and bed. This was 2 weeks of 'love walling' Smile

With Fridays off Very Happy I left that Thursday night and did three days of hiking in Sorak--I really recommend the Kong-nong-neung-sun trail, pm me for details. Back to Seoul against the traffic grain on Monday night for a laid back dinner with the in-laws on Tuesday. Worked Thursday and headed off to Chiaksan on Thursday night. Rain on Friday, excellent cold and clear skies this morning. Just made it back and am currently prepping for classes I've hardly seen in two weeks or so.

Well, I was at the branch in downtown Pohang on the friday before, immediately before the pre-Chuseok weekend, and saw nothing, nor was informed of anything to do with the ATMs not functioning, during the hour and a half I sat and waited for a money transfer to go through. Nor did I receive any messages on my call or any calls to tell me this was going to happen. Making it worse, I live in a dirty little village with two bank branches, but both of them are Nonghyup.

Thus, my holiday consisted of watching mind-numming television for 3 days straight. Wonderful. Nevermind, I'm leaving on Wednesday. Very Happy Very Happy
