Be warned. Everything that gets posted here is scrutinized by know-it-all smart arses eager for an opportunity to pounce. It's kinda cool in a way. Keeps people on their toes, and produces a higher quality of discussion than other forums where everybody is nice and polite. |
i will agree to a certain extent, but people also come across as a*holes when they jump all over you. they try to twist things around that you say to prove their point. i swear, some people on this board just look for an excuse to start an argument or piss somebody off |

Seriously, it makes me laugh when these "I didn't travel 3000 miles to hang around with people from my own country" types ultimately end up spending all their time trolling around Itaewon or Hongdae looking for other foreigners.
Lame. |
What about bitter foreigners who put themselves on a pedestal? |

Another thread falls into the same old same old pattern of sniping at each other. Instead of being snide to each other can people offer any help to the girl?
I live in Songpa and only know Itaewon a little and have never been to Hongdae so I am as much use as a chocolate teapot on this subject. |

Custom X,
If you misunderstood my post, let me clarify.
My comments were not aimed at you. I was simply saying that I've met a lot of newbies here who on one hand will prattle on about how they've traveled so far to gain cultural insight and awareness and have no interest in socializing with folks from their own neck of the woods, and then on the other hand start asking for directions to Limelight after the novelty has worn off, usually about three weeks later.
That was my point. Nothing more, nothing less.
The quicker people realize that moving here is hard, and they will inevitably need companionship from like-minded people, the better. |

I lived in Song-Pa last year (Seokchon-dong specifically). You need to hit Shin-chun...a couple great bars and you'll see a fair share of foreigners.
Gullivers used to be the place to go, but Tequilla Momma was my personal fav. spot (my picture is in the collage of pics on the wall when you walk in -- see if you can spot it) |

Oh, nice use of capitalization, idiot! What a troglodyte! I fart in your general direction and wave my private parts at your aunties!!! Ever heard of a little punctuation feature called a "period", nimrod!? And you want to be an English teacher? What a joke! You suck!
Aaaaaah...now I feel all intellectually superior.
See how it works around here? |

I figure having a few foreigner friends (or at least one good one) is pretty much a necessity for most foreigners. Helps with the adjustment (which may not fully happen ever), guarantees fluent conversation, and helps keep some sanity intact. Also it helps to be understood, to have another understand your living situation.
Did anyone really come to Korea to avoid all foreigners and spend all their time with Koreans? Did you arrive clueless about the country and its language ( like most of us I assume)
and then just figure you'd have an easy time hanging out with Koreans who spoke good English? |

Hi there
After reading all that has been posted, i`d like to clarify! I`ve been here already for about 2 weeks, and have been looking around on a weekend to places other than foreign hang outs, as it were! But, where I live, I would like to meet people to hang out with during the week and the odd weekends, just for conversation, etc etc. So far, have been to Itaewon, and Hongdai (?) and have taken up suggestions of other places, so thanks, and might see some of you on that night out. Cheers! |

| WEll, my suggestion would be to get involved with something- Korean lessons, or a healthclub or whatever- easiest way to meet people really. |

I got tired of recruiters saying 'you'll live in a nice area with lots of foreigners.' I'm not interested in meeting a lot of foreigners when I get to Korea, otherwise, whats the point of moving 3000+ miles away? |
and thats the problem with 90% of the foriegners in Korea today. They have no interest in greeting you, meeting you or associating with you in any way shape or form.
I affectionately call it the stick up the ass syndrome!
You know what? When I see another foreigner on the street I say 'hi', I smile, I wave. All too often foreigners ignore, look away, see you and move away, or pretend to have a call on their cell phones. Truly sad.
I dont want to be your best friend! I dont want to know your life story! I dont want to tell you my life story!
I just want to see some effing civility! |

Greatest. Idea. Ever.
Chocolatey tea. My God. How come people didn't think of this earlier?
:)
Back to the OT, you should try to make it to the meet if you can. We won't bite.. at least most of us wont. I can't speak for some of the goddamn renegades on this board... :D

No. I learned to avoid other foreigners after I came to Korea. |
